current quality (7/2008) of factory reman engines ?
I just read through about 30-threads on remans, and the woes of the factory Mazda remans engines.
What's the current quality status (7/2008) of factory reman engines from Mazda, supposedly coming out of Jacksonville, FL, but run under Delco-Remy (who are probably in low morale due to the crap GM put them under) ?
Are they worth getting, or am I better off going to Pettit Racing , Rotary Resurrection, or RotarySportRacing ?
I'm in Jacksonville, FL.
If the factory reman is poor, supposedly I can get new short-blocks via the MazdaSpeed program, but the description doesn't read new, instead it reads:
ENGINE-CALL MANA-RBLT3558
Part No : N3A1-02-200
and there's speculation I might receive reman, new, or nothing (I have a call into MazdaSpeed).
TIA,
:-) neil

get a reman, and immediately send it out to an engine builder.
They tend to have a surprising amount of new parts in them and everything should be well within spec.
You just want to have an experienced shop go through it to make sure it is in perfect order.

Last fall I spoke with Ray @ Malloy and read through some of the same threads you've been reading. Then, even if you got new/decent parts, assembly was as chancy as having Michael Jackson over to babysit. I doubt that's changed since.
You didn't mention it, but is rebuilding your current shortblock an option?
Edit: We posted at the same time.
If your shortblock is that solid, personally I'd have it rebuilt with parts from MAZDACOMP. Should be cheaper even with labor (assume your not doing it yourself). And you'll have some piece of mind knowing what you've got.

I guess I could send it to Rotary Ressurection have it opened, and then send all my new MazdaComps parts over, IF he'll accept that type of arrangement.

According to my AutoMeter gauge which has the sensor in the same area as the coolant buzzer sensor, 240-F.
Unfortunately, there was little coolant in that area, so I would say hotter than that.

Personally I'd consider re-building what you have. No guarantees, but with that low mileage, alot of stuff should still be good. At least you know your rotors will be matched and the oil pick-up isn't stuffed full of sealant.
Hard and soft seals, misc. copper washers, exhaust gaskets (from Mazdacomp) + Labor and your still under what a reman would cost. And you have some piece of mind while your installing it.

Mazda is in the process of moving all reman engine work to their new facility in the Richmond, VA area. They are currently doing Rx-8 remans there and will eventually do older rotaries as well. There is a guy on Rx-8 forums who works there and posts up about the place. He is the one claiming that they will eventually be trained to do remans of older engines.
