So when I bought my 7 the owner gave me two keys. One works the door, one works the ignition. They are not interchangeable. I forget his explanation at the time so how the hell does that happen?

And of course, how can I get this back down to one key? i didn't even try searching because this is so off the wall.

 

Call a lock smith and have them tumble the locks.

 

He probably changed the ignition key at one point...

The car was probably stolen at some point or something and had a different ignition lock installed.

 

i wuold think a good amount of sticky tape into the lock clyinder can do it some good. oh yes.

 

It could have been a lot of things:

stolen and recovered
ignition switch wore out and someone just replaced the whole thing
debris from the water-flap-cover on the door jammed it (is the passenger side the same key?)

If you get several used FD door locks and take them all apart, you should be able to reassemble using the "right" parts to make a match for the ignition key I would think. Taking apart the lock is not that hard with some basic tools.

 

Does the key for the ignition ONLY work the ignition and nothing else? If so, pull the ignition switch and have a locksmith re-do the tumblers in it to match the other keys. It's a little work to remove the ignition switch but not bad, but once that's out it's VERY simple for a locksmith to re-do it. I've had locks re-done with new tumblers while I waited for under $10.

I need to come to your area to get my locks fixed then. My local locksmith quoted me $75 in labor for rekeying each lock.

 

Why do you need to redo each lock ? If one key works in both doors, the hatch and the other works in the ignition, Then just remove the ignitiom switch and have it keyed to the door key. I don't see the problem as it would be realt easy to make the keys identifiable and less difficult to figure out which one goes where.

 

This is how mine is.

The black mazda key opens the drivers door, but not the passenger door. A 3 sperate keys turn the ignition, and none of the keys open the trunk.
