ok so i'm getting a 7 sometime soon. i'll def go with one with a recentrly rebuilt motor with maybe a streetport but my question is...
its a 10+year old car... what other components other than the reman or rebuild motor are prone to failure? i mean like the rest of the engine other than the reman, or maybe drivetrain components... even small things like solenoids.

if there is a rebuilt motor, chances are there have been reliability mods...

There are many components "around" the engine that can go bad as well as parts on the rest of the car (suspension, brakes, clutch, etc).

If I was buying an FD right now, I would get one with a blown engine. This way, I could take care of all the little things while the engine is out like: replacing all coolant lines, vacuum line job, replacing all gaskets, replacing all IC couplers & clamps, cleaning and flow balancing injectors, new wiring harness, replacing oil return lines to the turbos, etc... Depending on who did the rebuild/reman install, most of those items won't be replaced and used again....

If the engine is blown when you get it, you know exactly where you stand with the car and you can get those things as well as others taken care of right off the bat. The down side is, the car wouldn't be immediately driveable.

If you want to get one that is already running, read the various FAQ's around about what to check when purchasing. Good luck!

I would have to agree with mahjik. Not only for the reasons he stated but you can prob pick up a blown rex and rebuild it and actually save $$ from buying a running 7. Also, go to the RX7's for sale section and parts for sale section. Read up on some rides/parts there and ppl will post feedback on the cars/parts FS. Without doing a search this will give you a good base idea on what extra parts cost/do. But in all honesty I have owned my 7 for 6 months. Since, I have put 6k under the hood to bulletproof it and have her go fast, and it blew about a week ago while getting tuned. So nothing will make this car very reliable. If your not obsessed and have a good job, stay away

 

yea, if you dont like to spend a lot of money on a car that doesnt have a lot of money value, stay away. if you love rotary's go for it.

 

i spent endless hours on the forum and its not that i'm not on a budget but new properly rebuilt engines dont blow up soon if properly tuned and taken care of... how many miles on yours mr g lord focker?
