Counterweight Question - How to Identify
Counterweight Question - How to Identify
I am putting a auto engine back in the car... not because I prefer it, but because it is easy for now...and I don't have the manual parts.
I have a counterweight for the auto engine. It came off a manual engine car, so I presume that it was an aftermarket setup. I don't know what brand clutch was with it.
Is there a way to tell if this counterweight is correct for this engine? Are there more than one variety? This counterweight was run with these rotors and front counterweight before the rebuild, so I expect that it should be ok.
Please advise...

My understanding is that a stock automatic counterweight (or exact aftermarket copy) must be used with any aftermarket flywheel. Therefore, your counterweight is almost certainly the correct one.
Hey thanks for the reply.
I went home and inspected it carefully. It has no mark on it whatsoever. It does however look like the picture in the FSM, which means very little.
Once I ran a V8 with the wrong counterweight on the flywheel and it was not drivable about 25mph. This is what I want to avoid here.
I must be getting old because I pulled the engine from a manual car. When I rebuilt it, I knew that I would need a rear counterweight for the auto transmission. When I went out in the garage, there was one magically there, and I had no idea where it came from. I am loosing it. Pretty soon I will be able to hide my own easter eggs.
If someone could post a pic of a known factory counterweight (or the weight) it would make me feel a thousand times better about using this one.

First off, RX-7 counterweights are pretty special - you won't be able to use one from a Mustang, for example. The large hole for the end of the eccentric shaft and the slot for the key is unique to the rotary.
The only question is if it's for an FD or not - is there any chance you'd have FC parts lying around?
Mazdatrix's page has a bunch of flywheel/counterweight pics -

All the rear auto counterweights look the same. I've inspected tons of them and even I cant tell them apart once off the engine. They pretty much weigh the same from 86 up too. I believe the 84-85 one weighs another .1lb or so.
