Question Could starting my 7 by jumping the starter seilnoid with a screwdriver?

I've been doing this for about two months, cause i'm doing the auto to manual swap and my starter went out, well actually just the seilnoid(sp?).I have a 5 speed starter to put in ,but i had a delay in parts i needed. .Well when i first started doing this. The starter sometimes spin, but the engine doesn't try to turn over, and the fans kick on even though i haven't driven it for a while. Then i get it to start after it try turning over for about 10-15 sec of it crankin. Then sometimes i get a real loud back fire, and also it seems like know when trying to starting it,this is with the screw driver over the contacts of the selinoid. It seems like it turns longer before it fires up.My ? is can this be harming anything? Thanks
