Yea, we were all ok. We have always been able to walk away (totals, roll overs, fires...) We've been very lucky and insurance has been very very good for us. A lot of people complain about the cost of insurance, but we have really used it and have benifited from others using it. I'll bet you are never going to drive another car without being damn sure your payments are up to date. It's a hard lesson to learn.

You live in SF and from the pics it looks like you don't live in an area with ample garage space type dwellings. I'd part the car and get rid of it instead of keeping it as a donor. Get your cash now. Trust me. When I had parts cars I had 20 acres to use. In SF a garage space is GOLD.

Let me know what you end up doing. If you do part it there are some things I need and I'm in the area.

If you do get it fixed make sure the shop agrees on a fixed price including all engine needs. Then pay them this fixed amount. Costs have a way of creeeping in when you have a shop do work. Like they probably didn't include the a/c costs. You were probably running R12...$$. If you get it fixed go for the '99 nose. I saw you posted on that topic.

At the risk of sounding like an old bastard I post more crap... Any bodyshop worth anything isn't going to do anything like a "fixed price" repair unless you PAY them to tear the car down and really see all you need to fix it. There is no way it can be accurately by just looking at the car. Really they need to take it apart and see just what they have to deal with.

Anyone that has ever fixed any type of car knows that stuff always comes up. Hidden damage, etc.

R12 isn't really all that expensive. I just had my project car recharged with R12, $165. Cheaper than converting it over for sure.

It has been in their shop for over 3 months. No charge They let us keep it there because its our friends shop. Our garage sucks. Only fits 2 cars. They said they would give us a estimate but they had to tear the car down to see what had been done so maybe they do know what they are getting into? They said if the motor is still running good..it will save a lot of time and hassle. Also wouldnt it be a lot cheaper without an airbag? Like a couple thousand dollars cheaper? We don't plan on fixing the airbag sensors if the price gets too high. I have learned not to drive Without Insurance even if it is just to keep the car running decently. I have also learned not to trust and assume other peoples driving is safe. Since he was a truck driver I regarded him as experienced and a safe driver. That wasn't right and he smacked my side and i flew away. You live and you learn. Thanks guys

sorry but your car is DOA.. LOL ya I know someone that could out it back together for you but at what price.... I would ask that your friends put the car up on a rack and see how bad the passanger side is.. Your drivers side is done.. I would bet that the parts needed will be way over 6k.. I just had my FD come from the shop.. 2 front fenders lip back bumper and some body work on the right back panel was over 7 k... yours for 9k.. no way... I would not believe it....

luck to you....

turbojeff, agreed with the fixed cost thing. But he said he knew the folks..in addition I was just making a point that I know from experience FD reconstruction goes over an estimate. So, since the poor kid is doing this for the first time I'm just trying to give tips.

I have haggled a fixed price reconstruction.

Yea, R12 isn't hugely expensive, but the a/c system in an FD is...$165 is still $165. 134a or the others are like $20 bucks. He's going to need a condensor and a drier for sure. Not to mention the hoses. Most body shops do not deal with the a/c so it's an added chunk. Just pointing out the cost creapage that can happen and things the average person doesn't think about when facing a total.

If you wanted to sound like an old bastard you'll have to do better than that.

BTW: there was another post in the west forum where I guy had an FD that was an engine fire. He was in SF. I think he wanted 5500 or somthing for it. That would be a smart buy for you if you wanted to fix one or the other. The other one was silver on black. I think you should take a look.

Well my dad was selling his Porsche 930 K27 Turbo for about 25-30k since he is going to pick up his Lotus Elise next year. Maybe with that money I can buyy another FD3S. Anyone interested?
450 hp on pump gas, 15k miles on new engine that costed 20k, widebody, 75k miles on chassis, recently replaced with new tires and bbs rims, not an automatic

Airbag crap is very cheap. Figure $100-150 for the bag and just a few bucks for the sensors. Find used on the parts section of the forum.
