Coolant system flush question? PLEASE help

I just bought a 93 rx7 about a week ago and today i went to flush and refill the coolant system. I drained it and flushed it a couple times with some water. Problem is that i read that the coolant system is suppose to take 9.3 quarts or about 2 gallons and when i went to fill it up its only taking about a half of gallon, and i know its suppose to take more then that. I also am a little unfimilar with a cooling system with two caps, not really sure how that all works. I dont want to drive my car anywhere until i know that i have the coolant filled all the way up. Also nothing it going into the overflow tank behind the right headlight, if someone can tell what the hell im doing wrong i would really apriciate it,thanks

you need to lift up the drivers side ans take off the top hose for the throdle body. then you fill up the air saprater tank untill coolant comes out of the the hose you disconected. do this a copple fo times and you should be good to go.

Use the search feature and look for "throttle body coolant hose" to see the actual location of this hose that will help you bleed off excess air in the system. It's connected to the firewall side of the throttle body (if you don't know where or what this is, get a factory service manual and read up before you do anything), and is pointing inward toward the transmission. You need to use the filler neck to add coolant (the cap mounted to the engine, not the AST); the overflow tank (nearest the passenger side headlight) won't fill up when you add coolant through the filler neck-- you need to change that coolant manually.

It may help to "burp" the system by gripping the larger coolant hoses on the radiator and squeezing them until you stop seeing bubbles coming up the filler neck.

did you take the drain bolt from the engine block????

1. Turn on heater in car. Remove undertray.
2. Remove both filler caps (remember the one with the spring goes on the AST, the one without the spring goes on the engine fill tube).
3. Remove rad drain plug and engine drain plug (just below and between lower spark plugs).
4. Once drained (into containers for recyling/disposal of course), rinse with clean water - you can force it in both direction using a hose. Remove throttle body hose at this time to ensure full flush of system. You can also force water into this hose. Just don't use a good seal between the hose and the car, so you don't overpressure the car's system. The overflow tank should also be rinsed out. You can drain it using a short hose and the siphon principle. You will likely find "grundge" in the tank. This is normal.
5. Once all water has drained out you can use air to get a little more out. Replace drain plugs, but leave throttle body hose off.
6. Refill with mixture of your choise (water wetter, distilled water, ethylene glycol, or propylene glycol in whatever % you determine best for your application - I use 50/50 (or close) distilled water/ethylene glycol. Watch the throttle body hose closely as you -slowly- refill the system. As soon as you get coolant coming out of it put it back on. "Burp" the system as you get close to full by squeezing the rad hose. Put some of the mixture in the overflow tank as well (up to the "normal" level - for cold).
7. Replace both caps and start car. Watch closely as it warms up for leaks/warning lights. Leave heater on until car is warm. Once car cools off (next morning perhaps) check coolant level in engine filler tube. If lower than 1-2" you may add a bit more coolant. You may want to burp it again at this time as well.

Let the car cycle for a few days to see where it "settles" re coolant level. If it appears to be pumping coolant into the overflow tank, and not sucking it back, you have a -vacuum- leak at one of the caps. Replace them.

I'm about to change my coolant hoses tomorrow but does anyone else here experienced the annoying beeping sound from the coolant gauge??? It keeps going off when I put the key on to battery power only. Is this supposed to be happening even without the engine on?
