Coolant problem

For some reason i can only go about 30 blocks until my coolant light goes on. So when i go home i add more but not a bunch maybe a pint or 2 at most. So i was thinking there might be a leak but i cant find any. So i thoguth maybe my gauge is just going crazy and turnign on the light but its not the gauge because if i ride a little longer my car starts to heat up. Any1 know what this could be, is there some device that may not be letting the coolant to flow, because there is coolant in the car its jsut nto working. I wentt o a mechanic but not a reliable source and he told me that my water seals and o rings are already messed up so its leaking coolant into teh engine, you think he's right? Any infromation would help thnx guys

Your mechanic is sounding pretty reliable so far..

a) the coolant sensor is not part of the temp sensor gauge - it is a seperate sensor located on the filler neck.

b) the "device" that allows the coolant to flow is called a thermostat. yours could be stuck.

c) how far did you drive the car while it was "heating up". if the needle started to rise and you didn't immediately pull over, you may have damaged the engine.

d) if your mechanic actually knows about o-rings and coolant seals, then he at least has a clue and you should probably listen to him.

e) go do a search of the forum for how to test for blown coolant seals. do the test yourself.
