Coolant Pressure Test

Lately my car has been running hot and I can't seem to figure out why. Does anyone know the standard procedure for testing the coolant system? I ran a search and found conflicting procedures. Also talked to a rotary specialist shop in my area, and their procedure seems to differ from what I have read on the forum and whats stated in my manual. Right now I have the pressure tester hooked up to the AST with about 18 psi and it's been holding for the past hour steady.
