Coolant leak inside turbo?

Just a quick question as to if anyone has had their twins drip coolant internally from a crack in the exhaust housing??

My car has been running fine except for the fact that my turbos leak some oil and smoke bad for at leats 10 seconds on cold startup.

Lately I have noticed that I have to top off my coolant often because of the buzzer going off.

Just to throw this out there, I am an ASE technician/major gearhead and have recently replaced the FPD and changed the fuel and coolant hoses under the intake manifold to braided steel earl's hose and there are no leaks anywhere.

I am very suspecting of the turbos dripping coolant, because there is often a funny smell ( and I know my car smells well) from the exhaust and it seems like it could be a coolant simmering smell. Once I turn the car off, I here burning (boiling) drips often from the turbo area, but there is no external smoke.


THE ENGINE IS A REMAN. W/ ONLY 9K on it so...... motor is fine =)



I am just curious to see if others have had this experience with some older twins?

It's possible that the coolant lines going to/from the turbo are leaky. The turbo itself could not leak water internally - the water jacket is TOTALLY separate from the oiled bearing journals, and that's the only internal part of the turbo that's connected to the exhaust or intake.

A small coolant leak near the turbos could drip on the super-hot manifolds and evaporate quickly, making it trickier to find.

There is a coolant line coming from the turbo that frequently fails - search on "turbo coolant line". If you're having to top of coolant, you're either burning it or leaking it - that's the only option. It's going somewhere.

it could be the coolant line to the turbos, mine ended up leaking too so I decided to just go single...about the smell coolant has a sweet smell very diiferent from burning oil...

Yes, I guess I will check the coolant lines again. I had the turbos out of the car agood few months back and thew coolant lines are tight and never seemed to leak.

Yes, I know what coolant smells like, and this smells more like a fried coolant smell more than a steaming coolant smell..... Telling me that it must be frying on the turbo housings.

goodluck, It's a PITA to replace those, but you are ASE certified so you should not have a problem with that..

Yes, this is the right car for me. Working on it is not a problem, it just takes a little more patience and tearing down to get to the parts you have to replace.


I think it took me like an hour to an hour and a half to get the turbos out last time. i've had all the injectors out already, and I did the rat's nest hose before that. That stuff takes some time and being very careful with the cooked wire harness. I think that eventully I will re-wire all the wires under the intake manifold and maybe see if I can get som new(er) plugs.
