I think in many ways, rotary engines are actually far more reliable than piston engines, if for no other reason than the fact that they have far fewer moving parts that can fail.
True, the turbo rotaries have a shorter lifespan because of the heat that takes its toll on the engine. These effects can be dramatically reduced by performing the proper maintenance and reliability modifications, though.

I think you should go for it. It sounds like you aren't afraid to work on your car. So you'll be fine. Just buy a well maintained, low mileage car and read/research issues about the FD religously. You are already a step ahead by finding this forum.
I've had my car for seven years and I still can't even think of car that I would replace it with. Nothing (within reason, that is). I still find myself looking back, while walk away after parking, and admiring the car.
As you probably can tell, the members on this board know their stuff and are willing to help. The forum has really added to the enjoyment of my car. I just wish there were some chicks on the board, you know rx7 groupies...LOL j/k!

Okay, I found a place about 70 miles away that has a few for sale. I'm at the very least going to test drive one and assuming they are as incredilbe as everyone says I'm gonna get one!! So, I would rather pay a little more for one that has mods done to it already rather then spend 10K on it after I buy it. So, any recomendatoins when looking? I know some key features are the better gauges, upgraded radiator, dp, ast mod, FMIC(which I want for sure!!), BOV, ecu. Should I look for a converted single turbo? Also thinking a J&S Knock Guard might be a good idea. Sorry for all the questoins but I have time to look and want to do it right the first time! I will upgrade/add some parts but would like some done already. I would like an engine that has been rebuilt/replaced, what components should I look for? Any other recomendations of things to look for? Any other links or sites to read up more would be great!! After I sell my GSR I have a 90 Volvo wagon so I can be patient to find the "right car" for me

Sorry for the above long post, basically to sum it up, what is your dream setup for an RX7 withing reason, say to spend 10K on one. Then I can start looking for a car that would have some or all of those upgrades and finish the rest on my own.

re: japan's fastest street cars. Well... not sure about your definition of street car! BUT, the Rx7 is a constant standout performer in DRAG, DRIFT and CIRCUIT - it's an all-rounder. I can't think of any other japanese sports car that is really good at all three disciplines (possibly the silvia (s14, 15 in particular) - but it is outclassed in both drag and circuit racing by the fd3s).
That in itself is a pretty good promotion for anyone who is looking at japanese sports cars - and trying to find some sort of concrete basis for comparison.
BTW, here's a more recent list of Tsukuba circuit times (the track is used as the universal testing track for japanese top shelf tuners);
