Back when my FD was on the road I got comments at least once every week on it. My favorite was when this guy, mid 40's was at the gas pump filling his truck up and he came over and he said "excuse me, sir... Why are you putting that oil in your gas tank" I explained it to him, and he was blown away.

My best comment came from some drunk college girls hanging out of their car windows at a gas station...one yelled "Nice Ferrari!!!" As I was about to respond with something witty that would get me a number, my dear, dear friend Chuck (formerly of Rotary Extreme) yelled back: "ITS NOT A ******* FERARRI!" then he muttered "Dumb bitch" ...............thanks Chuck.
The other day I was rolling through my friend's neighborhood with him (has a modded, black 06 Legacy GT), our other friend Mick (modded 08 STi, all black, HUGE FMIC), and our friend Nick (modded 05 Black Mazdaspeed6). We passed a bunch of kids who were pointing and drooling. Being that it was nice all the windows were down. I saw them pointing and staring at Mike and Mick's cars, then one kid saw my car and said "THERE'S MORE!!" As I passed by them the youngest one pointed at my car and yelled "that one's mine!" The reactions from younger kids are often the most entertaining.

I had comments and complements all the time. But i dont have the FD owner big head because of it. IE: some nsx and viper owners. They think they own a veyron or something.
When i first got my car, it was literally like owning a REAL exotic. People breaking necks, thumbs up, people saying nice car. I even had people take pics while on the highway or when i was in a busy fast food parking lot.
This was many years ago and i dont get that much attention anymore. And i drive the car more than i did back in the day too lol.
Nowadays people dont really pay no mind to my car. But when i do get the comments, its just a question of what kind of car and usually their reaction to when i say, "mazda rx7", is just a "oh cool" response. I believe these days people look and ask questions about my car soley because its rare and they dont know what it is. Not much more interest is pursued after i answer their initial question.
I believe only real car enthusiasts and kids are the only ones left to appreciate our cars. Too many futuristic well designed cars out there now that will make our cars more appealing. Dont get me wrong, its a damn great looking car but its not the same as when i first got the FD. Totally different atmosphere. At least it is around me.

You can definitely see the shared "DNA" between the Miata and the FD, along with the exterior cues of other Mazda models of the same era such as the MX3 and MX6 to a much smaller extent.
I think the problem some people have with the comparison is the ignorant perception that the Miata is a chick car. Which is funny is given I have yet to see a woman driving one in California in all the time it's been around.

While I'm not the big-headed type, I'm somewhat looking forward to the comments from kids & stares again. I live in a pretty rural area & you wouldn't believe the things I heard when I had the first MX-3 & then Miata in the area.. so I'm expecting better with the FD. Mazda did some kickass stuff in the 90's!!

My FD is in pieces waiting for a rebuildt engine for the last two years, and ive poored much money into my house as there is more value there then in a car. But, ive finally saved up the money for a rebuild(expencive as hell in norway), so in a few months, we`re there.
The regulars when i was cruising was pictures, comments and tons of questions as its a pretty rare car up here. Kids and chicks drooling, and guys wanting me to floor it, pluss all the drag-requests you get... :/
The burner: Was done tanking up my FD one day, and was about to open the door when a guy came over and went " Hey man, is that the new Hyundai Coupe" ?
I gave him a serious WTF-face and just floored it in anger..!
The sexy: My sister is 25, the typical norwegian 180 cm tall blond, blue-eyed gorgeous stereotype chick. I had my FD parked in the city centre at a daytime marketplace/eveningtime parkingplace, met up with some friends who started buying me beers. As Norway has close-to-0 tolerance for alcohol and driving, and im a weak guy when it comes to beer, i called up my sister who was in town, to ask her to pick up my car and take it home for me. She was happy to do it and picked up the car 2 mins later. This was mid-summer, temp was nice and sun was out. When she arrived at the parkingplace, there was close to 10 guys oogling my FD(new rims, Spirit R titanium grey paintjob and CF-hood), when a hot blonde in a summerdress, shades and high heels excused herself through the crowd of guys, opened the door and got in. She popped the roof-window just in time to hear the dead silence transform into a choir of "HNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG" from the guys, right before she fired it up. She called me on the phone, describing the funny situation to me and asked to put on a show. As the car had been running for a good time just a few mins ago, i told her to check temps and gave it an all go. She chucked it into 1st, pulled out, and baked out two nice 15 degrees sideways strips until she hit the limiter. I bet 9 outta 10 came right there and then.. hahahaha
But, i find that i get just as many comments in my E.CCS 20B actually...! As its the top of the line model with all the cool parts like touch screen, 3rotor, GPS etc, people are mezmerized to find its a car from 1990..!

some of the joys of an owning an FD comes in different forms, whether you get positive attention or you get some infamy from it. a few of my recent experiences:
-i was gassing up one day and i just happened to look over at the next car. it was an old beater crown victoria. i then saw the owner mad ******* me to hell. he finishes fueling up, gets in the car and while still giving me and my FD nasty looks proceeds to peel out at the pump. he shoots off into the highway running the red light. he leaves a cloud of exhaust smoke that wreaked of coolant.
-riced out celica with 2 idiots pull up next to me at a light. they start to jeer at me because my car looks like hell to be honest. needs paint job. they rev at and point that we should race. i respond with my own and gave them an ear full of BoV and spool. they just looked away. i went back to enjoying my Alice in Chains CD.
-mustang convertable full of dudes on the highway messed with me. they were laughing (again) at how my car looks like hell. they yell at me in spanish that my car is worth ****. they immediately learned otherwise in their futile attempt to keep up.
edit:
as for compliments most of them have been the usual stuff we see here. the one thing ive done in particular, adding methanol injection, has garnered much praise. i get even more when they are able to touch the UIM after hauling major *** and beating on the car after a while as well.

I'm sure the comments people get about their FD's varies based on if the car is modded or not. Sometimes you'll see people that love the car but totally hate any mods to the car, and vice versa.
I remember after I got my Scoot hood back in 03 and my non-car enthusiast sister in law just took one look and said "You ruined your car." Similarly you have the purists that look at any mods (exterior) on the car as sacrilege.

I can't wait to bring my FD to San Diego and see what kind of reactions it gets.
There are very few FD's out here, and the few I've seen don't appear to be very heavily modified. Mostly other military guys, from what I can tell.
I'm hoping once I have the FD here, I'll begin to attract other like-minded enthusiasts.
My daily-driven routes aren't filled with many tuner cars anyways, but it'll be interesting to see what the rich yuppie San Diego crowds of Mission Valley and Fashion Valley have to say when they see me rollin' by.

I seem to be one of the few who prefer the 93-95 front bumper cover and/or very subtle exterior enhancements. I fell in love with the original lines & just prefer them - but to each their own.

I live on a military post and I usually get the stares, comments, and compliments everywhere I go. A lot of the younger crowd around the post are always asking how much I paid for it or how much I would sell it for. I also live on post and one time an MP was patrolling my neighborhood and he parked his truck and came to knock on my door because he saw my FD in my garage . A few other FD owners were on base too but have either PCS or ETS since I've deployed. I can't wait to get back and see if there are anymore around. As soon as I get home I've got to start putting my FD back together!
