I get compliments all. The. Dam. Time. Not necessarily a bad thing. I have on more than 1 occasion been asked "what year is that? 06? 07?"...hahaha

Naturally a lot of ppl have no clue what kind of car it is. And I'll pretty much talk cars with anyone, so if I sense that someone is genuinely curious about it I'll start explaining all of the technical details. They're always amazed at how much power comes out of so little displacement.

But yeah, when I drive it I get stares, compliments, and envy at least a few times a day.

I hear the Miata one more often than any other though. Most people are kind and genuinely curious though.
The Miata has been described as the "first seriously emotional Japanese car." In June 1989 its design was widely considered asthetically superior to the (then) RX-7. And Tom Matano was heavily involved in both the Miata and the FD body developments. There is no shame in being mistaken for a "bigger" Miata, although I can see why some FD owners would consider the mistake insulting.

I actually had some older gentlemen say mine was a miata and when I explained it was a 93 rx7 the guy immediately apologized in a "OH god what have i done mistaking an fd for a miata!" tone >< And had another guy cruise up to me in his brand new bmw at 100mph (I was doing 80 and he caught me pretty quick) just to give me the thumbs up.
I think the best comments and happenings are when you see another fd on the street and you both give each other the "you sir are awesome look"

You can definitely see the shared "DNA" between the Miata and the FD, along with the exterior cues of other Mazda models of the same era such as the MX3 and MX6 to a much smaller extent.

I think the problem some people have with the comparison is the ignorant perception that the Miata is a chick car. Which is funny is given I have yet to see a woman driving one in California in all the time it's been around.

I only saw an FD driving around one time in the four years, while I was passing through St. Louis there was a clean montego blue on the freeway. I literally stared at it for 30 minutes worth of traffic before he exited. God, I love the FD.

You traded in your rx8 for an rx8??

Damn you must love them.

Yup, couple of my friends has mistaken my MX-6 as an FD before, they said at a certain angle they look alike. I think people think Miata is a chick car base on their reaction when they see one, chicks tend to say "Oh that's a cute car", but what you don't hear often is "Oh I want one of those". I do see female driver in Chicago, but I can say it is equal amount between male and female.

People have complemented me on my Viper, Ferrari, Corvette, and Ford Probe (I don't know) multiple times.

People are blown away that it's a car from 94 and that you can buy one for around 14K.

True story, but if I wanted the financial burden and impractically of owning an FD at this moment, I would have bought an FD. Doesn't stop me from keeping the 8 getting one or two FD's in the near future once a post college career settles though .

Just yesterday a guy in a BMW rolled up at a light to tell me that the FD was his favorite car of all time and two days ago as I was rolling through the Home Depot parking lot I overheard a little kid, no more than 8 years old saying "Daddy, that's a cool car!". Mine's a track rat and looks pretty rough around the edges too, so I can only imagine what it would be like to have a nice looking FD :P

My FD just got a spankin' new paint job and I still don't get too many looks or comments.....which is fine by me. It's only been a week, so maybe that'll change. I do enjoy coming by another FD when I'm in the car though....and you give each other that little salute, like you know something everybody else doesn't.

IIRC, the 3rd gen RX was built on the Probe chassis/frame....since Ford had bought Mazda and everyone was trying to save money. I think I remember reading that 19 years ago in MT or R&T. That would explain some of the commonalities.

I think its cool when young kids latch onto it. No offense to any Evo or WRX owner, because I know those are great cars, but no matter how fast you make that car or how many spoilers you put on it, its just not a sleek car. I will always see it as modified econobox as that's what those style of cars were when I was growing up. Maybe the next generation will demand some cool new sports cars again as they are few and far between right now.

My best comment came from some drunk college girls hanging out of their car windows at a gas station...one yelled "Nice Ferrari!!!" As I was about to respond with something witty that would get me a number, my dear, dear friend Chuck (formerly of Rotary Extreme) yelled back: "ITS NOT A ******* FERARRI!" then he muttered "Dumb bitch" ...............thanks Chuck.

"You know how I know you're gay?"

Lol seriously why would you correct drunk college girls about what car you have? If they think its a ferrari that's great, get them in the hotel first, then correct them.

LOL you guys are hilarious. If my wife is in my FD when I get some drunk girl "NICE CAR!" comment, she'll probably yell back "STEP OFF *****!!!" or something to that extent.

Ah, okay. Not a bad choice.

There's somebody in the "WEST: For Sale" threads who's got a '99 plate-less front-bumper...

If I didn't already have what I have, I'd buy that thing in a heart-beat...I think he only wants like $250 for it too, urethane.

What are you doing for sides and rear on ur FD?
