Clutch and tranny experts, please give me your opinions!?!?!
Here's why I ask.
I dynoed today at 316rwhp@13psi(all bolt-on's , etc.). Which doesn't sound bad at first, but considering I just did a y-pipe and TwinPower install, my hp rating today was actually a tad lower than the one a month ago. We did a/f, bla, bla ,bla...leaned it out and picked up a couple ponies, bla ,bla, bla, but couldn't figure out why I am coming up kinda short.
Some things I've noticed:
First of all, my clutch DID slip, but that was last winter. I was driving in 4th or 5th, went WOT and the rpm's just climbed but the car really didn't go anywhere, felt like I was mauling the tires. It did this a few times, but then the symptoms disappeared and that hasn't happened since. Is that even plausible? My clutch slipping, then magically grabbing again? Hell, I've even taken it to the track after that.
Next, I've noticed that when going WOT, especially in 2nd to 3rd shift, I need to shift a lot sooner than I used too. I'm shifting around 57mph, my tach just climbs, but it doesn't seem to be making speed. Now, when I ask anyone about the clutch, they always ask me about the situation above, where the car is revving in 5th gear but not making any speed. The only thing is, my car is non-seq now, so it hardly makes any power throughout the midrange. I was thinking that it starts slipping at high rpm's, because the boost just kinda comes on all at once now. Is this possible? To not slip through the mid, but slip up high when the boost comes on?
How much power can be lost through a clutch?
One last thing. If I do revamp my tranny, I was planning to do everything at one, so tell me if you think this is a bit overkill. 6-puck clutch, 8.5# flywheel, carbon fiber driveshaft, and 4.77 final gear. I plan on doind mostly track events(auto-x, drag, not a daily driver at all) and also getting a very LARGE single turbo here in the near future(lots of lag), but is a setup like really worth it in terms of revs, rotating inertia, and so on?

my car has 67k miles now and the first owner changed the clutch at about 45k miles. The guy that is rebuilding my motor said that if I'm nice to my clutch I'll have about a year and a quarter left on the one in there now. so it looks like the clutches are lasting about 40k miles with average abuse.
if you push the car sometimes and at the track especially and you have more than 40 or 50k miles I'd say you probably need to change it
now I just noticed you have 44k miles
since you actually use your car for what it's for and with those miles I'd say u need a clutch
