Clutch pedal problems.

I'm down to the point of bleeding the brakes/clutch on my project car, and I got the brakes bled, and they are perfect.


But the clutch pedal is bled out (I even went and bought a vacume bleeder.), but only about the last 1/4 of the pedal has pressure! And by this I mean the slave cylinder (the part that bolts to the fire wall), is not moving in/out all the way, the pedals rod isn't even touching it until the last 1/4 of travel. So I went and pulled the spare off of my parts car, and it has the same amount of travle (the acctuall cylinder.) Are they both rusted up/stuck? I couldn't get ther other one to come out anymore, and I took it apart as far as I could.... Any ideas?

Also, is there an insert between the rod/cylinder on the fire wall? Something that might take up about a 1/4-1/2" of space?

One possibility is your master cylinder is stuck "in" a little bit and isn't returning to the full-back position. Rust in the cylinder bore or something like that could cause a problem of this nature.

How many miles are on your clutch hydraulics? At the very least, I'd pull the master clutch cylinder and do an inspection on it. A new one shouldn't be too pricey.

I just finished battling with a similar problem. Only after I put in a new slave did I find the real cluprit. The adjustment nut had worked loose on the clutch rod and had adjusted all the way in, making clutch engagement happen when the pedal was almost all the way to the floor.

i'd check that rod first, it's an easy fix.

If that is not your problem, I'd pull the master out as Dale suggests and inspect it, you may be due for a new one.

That's what was wrong with both of them. I had to pull out the C clip, and roll up some 400 grit sand paper, and sand the rust out, then blow the clyinder inside of it out with the air compressor. Then sand it some more.... And now it's working great!


It's funny that both of them would stick in the same place
