cleaning/washing engine bay
Simple Green will cause ozidation on various polished metal surfaces..like an intercooler, or a fancy schmancy Cusco strut tower bar.
I've used it w/ great success on areas that were not bare metal (like a painted metal area such as the strut mounting areas), but thought I would warn you about areas that are polished.

i use gunk foamy (engine brite)....i buy it at autozone
spray it on a cold engine...let sit a few mins.
hose it off , and start the car..
then i spray the engine with foamy tire wet
and close the hood...
i wash the car as the engine is running...and turn it off when i start to dry the car
pop the hood , wipe everything down with a rag ...
and wipe down polished parts with glass cleaner, then metal polish..
the end

yes I heard of that as well~~~ Simple green has a tendency to slowly take out alluminum surfaces... however I did it on mine like 100 times and its still fine~~~ cross my fingers.
I would still go with recomended detergents for the engine bay due to the fact that our cars are very old now... old hoses... ect.

FWIW, I've used Gunk's Engine Brite on several cars with good success (including the FD).
