cleaning intercooler

i currentluy have my intercooler out and i remember reading in a thread somewhere that some people have cleaned thier intercooler and have got better response. i remember that they said that they used carb cleaner, but my question is how do you clean it? do you spray it on the inside? outside? both?

i have the stock intercooler and it has never been cleaned.

I used 2 bottles of fuel injector cleaner. Agitated it for 20 minutes and out came quite dark fluid.
