cleaning housings for rebuild

what is the best way to get all that nasty stuff from the sides of the housings and get them all clean for a rebuild
brass brush? , rotary adapter ? 1200 sand paper ?

Gasoline and a wire brush, then an air grinder with a rolloc bristle.
