choosing the right spark plug???

how does one go about choosing the right spark plug? Yes, I searched - and there is simply too much data to sort through. I am pretty sure the puge ratings has to deal with heat, but I don't get the how/why of choosing the right plug. Are there any websites out there that make this choice easier?

I am pretty sure I want to go with NGK plugs - are there any automotive parts stores that sell these?

Not sure about Mn. but I get my NGK 9's at Advance Auto Parts. I also think Pep Boys sells them. I've always run NGK's btw.
