checking endplay?

has anyone ever checked the endplay with a feeler gauge , before you think i'm crazy i watched it in a video at pineapple racing http://www.rebuildingrotaryengines.c...tting_end_play the reason i'm asking is a do not have a dial indicator nor the money to buy one as my rebuild is already over my budget and the measurement i'm getting seems to loose to be possible. i got .0066 which is almost double the max. in the service manual. did i do something wrong or is the method inaccurate. thanks

Are you measuring in inches or mm?

Spec is 0.04 to 0.07 mm's, with the max allowable being 0.09. For high powered engines, we tend to like them around 0.07.

Also, we have the tool you need at the shop......you can either bring the motor by for us to check it for you (we also have every thickness spacer known to man, lol), or you can borrow the metric dial indicator. Just shoot me a PM

I would recommend using the proper measurement tool. You don't always need to buy the tools yourself. I'm sure Rich or several other people in your area have the proper measuring tools.

Anybody with a machining or assembly background should have a dial indicator they can lend you.

Also, Harbor Freight has the tool VERY cheap. Works just dandy.

IMHO, that's the right way to do it. Endplay is essential to set right.

yup ^ i used a dial indicator and did it according to pineapple's instructions. my endplay was .004 inches. just switching to a thinner spacer knocked it down to ~.0015-.0018. you might want to see if your thrust bearings are in spec and also make sure you're torquing to down to 200ft-lbs before measuring.
