Check Engine light problems

I'm trying to check for error codes for my 96 RS.
I go through the instructions I found on the web for finding the error codes. Unfortunately my engine ligh is not lighting.
From what I suspect the light is burned. Is it a way to make my check engine light illuminate so I can verify that the light works?

Help is very minimal in Europe so I'm basically on your hands.

Your check engine light should come on when you turn the key to the 'on' position, before you start the engine. Its then supposed to go out after the engine starts.

Yeah, if the light doesn't come on and your bulb is burnt, you'll have to take the dash pod out to get to the bulb I think.
