change the rear end gears?

So does changing to 4.3 gears feel all that different? I am pretty sure that is the only option for gears that we have but at Mazdatrix.com they list a 4.875 and a 4.444. What is that about?? (www.mazdatrix.com/price13.htm if you want to take a closer look ) Post away!!

www.rx7.com has a whole list of them. I don't know probably 5 different rearend gears that you can choose from. All I know is that you are supposed to get better acceleration through the gears however you will not top out as high.

Ok gears. The whole point of gears are to multiply the torque to the ground. If you change to a higher # that means the gears are lower and multiply torque more. They will wind up quicker and you will feel the acceleration much more but it will not make you faster in the sense of the word. No more power will come out of the motor like adding boost or an intake etc. It will get into the higher RPMS faster which means you can get into your power band faster, The only benfit would be off the line with good traction. True it will also change your top speed to a lower MPH. But it makes it up off the line. If your in street trim there is no point in doing gears. If your all out racing on the drag strip or at a road track where you need quick response out of hard turns then gears are a benefit. as a matter of fact the RX-7 has such a broad power band that its not beneficial to put in lower rear end gears because you will run out of your power band quicker. Its better to change your fifth gear to a lower ratio so you can use fifth gear for continued pull. A street car however will want to keep the 5th gear as an overdrive gear for highway use. The stock gears are already low 4.10's i believe.
