"change engine" light....I am getting that feeling....

Well well well.......

I get in my car this morning to run to McDonald's, start it up and immediately the 'add coolant light and buzzer are on. So I check it out, add about 4 oz. of coolant to top off the filler neck and the light and buzzer go off, so off I go. Get about a mile from the house, it comes back on, so I watch the temp gauge for another half mile or so, and all of a sudden it just starts climbing FAST! So, I pull over, shut it off for a few minutes, start it back up, it starts just fine and head home. Everything seems okay, I am surmising that the thermostat stuck but still....
Sigh.......it is undeniable that there is STILL some coolant leaking somewhere. I see nothing under the car, which leads me to believe that I have a small leak in one of the 'O' rings in the engine.

I am gonna change the thermostat, and tinker for a while, but am psyching myself up for an engine rebuild.

I really want to just take mine out and put in a nice mild streetported engine. I am curious if the stock ECU has any problems with a streetport?

Think it might be related to your "flogging the living @#$%" out of the car thread yesterday? You said that you had changed the coolant, any chance there was some air trapped in the system and you're actually getting it filled back up when you're having to top it off?

I don't think a mild streetport will affect the ECU much at all - it will play with your idle but I believe the ECU will be able to handle it fine. When I got mine ported, I dropped in the Haltech at the same time.

Question

Are you seeing any white smoke coming from your exhaust?

Also, in my opinion it's not cost effective to "mildly" port any motor. I think it's best to get a full blown street port or run stock. Also, any time you enlarge your ports your timing should be altered to go along with them---I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure any kind of porting and a stock ecu don't work well together.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

You could have a small external leak and not notice any coolant on the ground.

When my car was about 4 years old, I had exactly the same symptoms you had. Low coolant buzzer would go off. I would fill up the coolant and everything would be fine for a day or two. An then the same thing would happen again. I checked for a coolant leak but I found nothing and no coolant on the ground. This went on for about 1 week. Once again, while I was driving, the low coolant light came on, I pulled over, popped the hood open and there was a very small stream of coolant pissing out of the upper radiator hose from a pinhole. The hole was so small that the coolant would not leak unless the engine was on and the cooling system pressurized.

I would check all hoses while the engine is on.

This is the ODDEST thing........

Okay, I went out to change the thermostat, decided to start it up first, it started harder than ****, almost acted flooded. But once it caught it ran fine. No smoke out the exhaust. None.
In the meantime my son wanted to go see '8 Mile' so I just said **** it for now. Just came back, the car started just fine.
But.....I had to add about a pint of coolant to fill it up.

I am starting to question the whole deal, really.

Thanks for the advice regarding the streetport, keep in mind that I have an automatic and have limited/no options on the ECU.

*Cough* tranny *cough* swap . Yeah, I'm an A.T. uncle Tom. Anyways, doesn't the AEM EMS retain the hold function?
