As long as you have the proper tools, workshop manual and patience, you can change/fix anything on the car.

Do you have jackstands?

Look in Section F under "Fuel Evaporative System".

Also, you don't really "fix" the charcol cannister, you just usually replace it.

I doubt that's your problem though...

if you think the smell is from teh charcoal canister you might start by tracing down the lines and making sure you dont just have a leak

I'd also check the fpd

Yes, it could be the cannister. The cannister handles the gas fumes while the engine is not under load (i.e. at idle).

However, people have also had this problem from a broken or damaged gas cap. Sounds strange, but if you search, you'll see a few posts about it.

Here's what I would do if I were you:

1. Check your gas cap. Make sure it's not cracked or anything. Also, when you put it on the car, STOP turning at the first click.

2. Have the fuel system pressure tested for leaks.

3. Last, check the charcol cannister.

I had the gas odor problem a while back. It cost me about $40 to have the fuel system pressure tested at Mazda. After verifying no leaks, I then began checking the check valves for the evaporative system. My gas odor was only happening during acceleration though.

Where is it you ask . It is in the rear end on the drivers side. up high beside the rear end. Just follow the gas lines back one of then goes there .If you remove the entire system you will never miss it.
