Ceramic coating LIM and downpipe question/opinions
I'm thinking about getting this done and would like some opinions/facts about it. I've read alot about it, but I'm wondering if its worth it for me or if I should just get a pettit lim heat shield if it even works with the stock non sequential turbos?, and use some good heat reflective tape on the lim. my main goal is to try and get a little performance increase mainly for drag racing where there may or may not be enough time for a ton of heat soak. so i'm trying to make a decision on what to do and it would be nice to not have to spend a lot me money haha. the lim seems to get most of the heat soak just from being bolted to the hot engine, the top half of it doesnt get hot after some quick testing i did today, idleing for a while and after driving with high boost, granted it is cold out. also thinking about just wrapping my downpipe although its not stainless steel, to save some money. thanks

I got my stuff ceramic coated and ill be honest I haven't got to test if it actually keeps stuff cooler. I like how it looks though and I am guessing there should be some benefit. I got it coated by caps ceramic coating, american chopper (or whatever that discovery channel motorcycle show is called) uses them for all there stuff so you know they are good and they only charged me 198 bucks for both upper and lower intake manifold. That includes shipping.

During my 35R build I contacted IR Performance to ceramichrome my UIM, LIM, waterpump housing, and filler. I can say that I am very pleased with the results. My under hood temps are significantly reduced. Not to mention, it looks amazing!!
Polishing? Why bother. This coating is extremely functional & looks great.

I ordered some DEI Titanium exhaust wrap for the downpipe and will sand it and spray it first. is there enough performance increase/help keep intake temps low to make it worth the cost and hassle to get the lim and uim ceramic coated? i've done turbo swaps and engine swaps so I'm not worried about the work involved. and that Pettit heat shield is not made to work with the stock twins, it wont fit right, but I'm still thinking about making a stainless steel heat shield for it. I talked to Pettit about it. thanks for the info guys.

Heat removal isn't as much of a performance modification as a reliability modification.... Your engine will thank you.
It's like dual oil coolers.
Would your FD function fine without it? Sure. But it will prolong the life of your components. Rotaries DO NOT like heat. Any and all cooling mods that you can accomplish is a step in the right direction.

I got many of my parts cc'd at IRP. I'm not sure if it was because of the coating but I noticed my car warmed up alot faster. As far as underhood temps, I think I got to many mods done at the same time to give you a real answer. I remember my car used to COOK. I don't remember thinking so after I got my car back from the last round of mods.

I don't have any before/after temperature measurements, but the parts don't seem to absorb as much heat as they used to... However, a lot of things in the engine bay changed at the same time so it's hard to do an apples to apples comparison.

Defintely coat the downpipe and wrap it. If you've got the turbos off, I'd do the manifold and turbine housings too. Coating the exhaust side will make the most difference.
You might want to check out turboblown's LIM blanket. I've got ceramic coating on the upper and lower plus the blanket but don't have any data to quantify things.

I got my UIM/LIM ceramic coated, extrude honed, and teflon coated (on the inside) at once. Then I got Turblown's Inconel LIM wrap (http://www.turblown.net/store/index.php?productID=56).
I'm pretty sure I picked up the version for the xcessive LIM, so the shield is a bit big, but that's good because it leaves a gap for air between the shield and LIM.
Unfortunately, like Supernaut, I got a lot of stuff done at once, so it's hard to say exactly where my additional cooling came from (though underhood temps were WAY DOWN!)

Thanks for the pics and info guys, it all looks very good. I'm also thinking about getting the efini y pipe and the intake pipe off the rear turbo all ceramic coated because they get extremely hot from sitting above the turbos. But this is all adding up to be expensive options and I wasn't looking to spend alot haha. Also thinking about getting a feed replica hood from Shine pictured here to vent out some of that hot air, this hood has vents above the turbos so I assume it would be a good hood for this purpose. Then maybe the intake pipes and intake manifolds won't cook so hot?
I am more looking at all these options for performance rather than looks, I don't want to spend the money just for good looks, heck I might even leave the Feed hood black on my red car which doesn't look bad IMO.

Trout2 - I was supposed to receive air flow maps before and after the honing. Unfortunately they were not included and I was too busy to chase that at the time, now I'm deployed and I think it may be a little too late.
What I was told though was that it is meant to increase airflow by ~48% (with significant gains over 4500rpms) and even out airflow differences between the rotors to less than 1%.

How does coating the parts you listed lower the under hood temps? I can see that it would isolate your parts from heat and so the IAT and maybe the water temps would be lower but wouldn't a measurable drop in underhood temps only come from blocking heat from the turbo(s) and downpipe?

I think I'm gonna try some of this Aero-Lite High Temp Reflective Tape, I've read some good stuff about it, it's about $23 for 12"x15" and it's supposed to be the best, I think I read it reflects 95% of radiant heat. I was thinking of putting this on my lower intake manifold like the picture attached, and under the UIM, and around the efini ypipe and intake pipes above the turbos, not sure if I should do the IC pipes after the efini ypipe.
Still waiting to see here back from IRP to see how much all the ceramic coatings cost, but figured I could save money by using the tape instead, and thinking about doing the exhaust manifold and turbo manifolds hot side with the hi-temp satin coating. And I want to order that Feed style hood to help reduce heat under the hood and heat soak.
I also ordered a fast reacting IAT sensor from fighters garage. and I'll be wrapping my downpipe tomorrow probably.
