Exclamation center iron good to use or no??

Ok, so i bought all 3 irons from a member here, and during shipping, ups managed to beat the crap out of everything, so i was hoping for some more knowledgeable people to give me some opinions, The stationary gear decided to nibble on the innermost portion of the center iron and left some small marks where the inner control ring will be traveling.

I am thinking i could just smooth it out with some 2000 grit sand paper then polish it up with my polishing wheel(white tripoli) so anyways, here are some pictures, cellphone quality, but i will upload better ones!

Let me know what yall think!

The second picture is of the bottom, and they dont look near as bad, the top ones are most concerning for me.

out of the wear track but i would recommend making sure there is no high spots by knocking them down with a sanding block first so that they don't scrape up the oil seals. a dremel with a sanding wheel can also carefully clean it up.

How were they packaged? Personally I wouldn't be too happy using those in my engine, especially when paying for good irons.

I've had so many engine parts arrive damaged over the years it's not even funny. You have to basically bombproof them when packing......

so they were shipped with the stationary gears still bolted to the end housings, eh? since i've had the occasion to buy private party engine parts through the mail quite a few times now, i've come to realize that a lot of people just don't think about (or possibly don't care about) what happens during freight. i remember buying an eccentric shaft once, and after getting the delivery notice, i basically went to pick up an empty box with a nice hole punched through it.

as Goodfellafd3s said everything needs to damn near be bomb-proof.

Yeah, stationarys were attached, the box was some of the thickest cardboard I've seen, twice as thick as what my 21 gallon compressor came in, a lot of bubble wrap and cardboard to separate each plate. Didn't write fragile or anything anywhere on the box, or this side up or anything like that. I'm definitely not happy about it but I gotta bite the bullet I guess, I mean it could have been substantially worse, my bad luck has to end sometime, 12 brand new oem corner seals...11 of them perfect, 1 broken in half, I would love to find "Murphy" and give him a piece of my mind....anything that can go wrong will go wrong.......gtfo!

And hopefully your eshaft had some kind of insurance...... that's pretty bogus

strong boxes, bubble-wrap and cardboard separation are only a part of it. movement of the parts needs to be eliminated (or at least grossly limited). my e-shaft experience was a prime example of that. there was insulation and such, but the box was way to big for it. assuming it traveled by truck, all that was required was heavy braking from maybe 40 MPH and the shaft had enough space to run right through the box it was packaged in and maybe even a neighboring package. somewhere, some dude was assembling a computer table or something and spent hours trying to figure out where the shiny metal piece went???? for the record, the gentleman i bought the shaft from was a pleasant surprise. he refunded my Paypal and apologized. i won't soon forget that.

it is what it is, i guess. it's the chances we take when buying things from strangers - the whole Forrest Gump box of chocolates ...-thing.

oh, and as for Murphy, just give me a call when you find him. not only do i have your back, but i insist on getting my piece of his slick-talkin' ***, too!

Yeah, I agree it all coulda been prevented with better packaging but given the opportunity/need id buy from him again, giving me a partial refund, and was real understanding the whole time. Just have to make sure it gets packed right. At least its still useable

at least the damage is in a non critical area, if it was even millimeters further it probably would be classified as unusable. most builders on this site probably would already classify them as that, but those who know realize that it is inside the area that seals the oil from the outside of the oil seal carriers. once you cross that outer wear line just a bit further then it can allow oil to seep into the CC.

I bought a set of irons and housings. They were all tossed in the same box and shipped half way across the country. When I got them they were junk. Could have been doweled with 4 bolts and would have survived. Buyer beware.
