I'm new to this forum (I don't own an FD yet, but it's a definite possibility). I've read all the sigs of the big time posters, and there doesn't seem to be a trend in which cat back exhaust that is being picked overall. For a downpipe/midpipe I know it would be almost completely irrelevant, but for the catback (since it includes the muffler) I would think that there would be a more clearly defined winner.

I'm looking for the best hp gains, and I'm not really concerned with how it sounds or how loud it is (though they are benefits).

I'm pricing out a 1994-5 RX-7 RD, and I would like to do some basic bolt-ons up front, so I'm trying to research what type of power I could get before I have to move to a standalone ECU (any suggestions there? I'm considering either a Power FC unit or the Motec M4. I don't know how to tune myself, so it'd be professionally done)

A lot of folks get a loud muffler and then later switch to the Racing Beat dual-tip cat-back (painted 409 or polished 304 SS) when they can't take the noise anymore. Someone told me that when I bought my FD 5 years ago. I didn't listen and got a Greddy Power Extreme and then later replaced it with the RB. The PE acutally wasn't that loud, but I wanted the more subtle look of the RB and the sound level reduction was an added benefit.

I'm sure you'll do the same, but be sure to pass on the story after you switch to something quiet and read a question like this from someone else in 5 years.

Yeah, I don't think a lot of people can comprehend how truly LOUD an FD can get.

As far as your ECU choice, I'm personally a big fan of the PowerFC - plug in, and the car instantly runs better, drives better, and makes great power. The Motec is a great system, but VERY pricey and really needs a pro to install and tune. I'd go with a PowerFC and use that extra money towards other fun things for the car .

Anyhow, there's really not a "clear winner" on exhausts - part of it is the look you want as well. There are quite a few out there. Just find something in your budget that has the look you want, and go from there. BTW, even the loud exhausts are pretty tame while you still have cats on the car - only when you totally open up the system do they get loud. IMHO it's worth while getting a system that comes with or has a silencer available. Many cat-backs drone pretty bad on the freeway - if you're making a long car trip (to, say, Sevenstock ) you can always pop in the silencer, have a quiet trip, then pop it out at your destination.

Although I differ from most of the board in this, I kinda like the giant tip look (like a 4") and I'm not particularly averse to rice... though I'm not planning on putting a body kit or a wing on until i've gotten at least 450 rwhp. Any ideas? (Flames shooting would be excellent)

the RB is one of the best catback.but miy friend offer me a m2 performance catback and i buy it for less tah RB. i recommended too u . 3"inch piping complete stainlesteel and is very quiet .i just say i loveit...
and the performance was very noticiable .i got the single tip but it comes dual tip if u want to stay stock look.
