car stalled on freeway and wont start

I just bought a 95 FD with mild mods. I had been driving for about two hours bouncing between 70 and 100 plus. It was running awesome, keeping the temp guage needle a little below the middle. At about 80 I was going up a hill, and my car lost all power and stalled out. I pulled over to the side of the freeway and tried restarting it....didnt happen. I had to get it towed back to a little town where nobody has even heard of a rotary. I cleaned the spark plugs and put them back in...nothing. It seems to me that it could be electrical. I haven't checked my fuses. When I turn it over there is a smell of gas, and it puffs out a little bit of white smoke (i think unburned gas). I tested the spark, and its good. So i know its got spark and gas. It does backfire occasionally when trying to start it. Anybody have any ideas??

try push starting it, it sounds flooded to me, this is fairly common with rotaries

The fact that it stalled at speed pretty well eliminates flooding I think..

I'd be getting it flat-bedded or trailered out of there and to somebody who can diagnose it properly.. It could be as simple as a bad wiring joint or failed igniter..

But if you let people mess with it who don't know what they're looking at/for, they'll most likely do more damage..

Good luck with it..

if it does in fact have spark and it is getting fuel, a compression test is a good step before you go hunting something. un flood the car through a little oil in the chamber and get a compression test done

yeah after the spark plug change failed we figured we were screwed. its gettin trailered home and taken back to 2 guys that are true rotorheads. the people were kind of amusing though. when we got it off the freeway and back to the shop (dewey's automotive in covington for any VA posters) we locked it up and went to the only place open at the time for plugs. 24 hour wal mart. when we got back there were 4 guys just sittin at the car checkin it out. they really liked it. one had a turbo'd s10 that was running a whopping 3 1/2 lbs. another gangstered guy told me nice rx-7. i said thanks and then tried not to smile when he asked if it was turbo (the hood was up). a few others tried to help and when i asked if the knew what kind of engine it was, they'd reply with, that's one of them rotary things, right, with a lil ole four banger in it? funny stuff. sorry for the long post, but i'm stuck in virginia with a laptop in a hotel room and a broken FD.
