I've never been a fan of meshes because I don't like how most look on cars. But now with my V-mount setup, things coming in and damaging my radiator and intercooler fins is a growing problem. Anyone have any suggestions for a car mesh that is subtle? Realistically I'd want an invisible mesh or something. Maybe something painted black? I'm not sure

you probably want something robust, and mainly to stop the larger rocks and such. even a deflected rock will do less damage to your radiator than a direct hit.

You could always go with the gutter mesh like you see on ... well, around my area, on all the hondas with body kits.

Was there a specific look you wanted?

 

Just get the ricerstuff and paint if flatblack, most other stuff is to fine and will block too much air.

As long as it doesn't block more than the radiator and ic will flow together... it won't matter.

There have studies that show that the air traveling through the ic slows down VERY drastically (ie 5 mph is)

The mesh I used on my FD has worked very well over the years. I can check out the box when I'm next at the garage and let you know the brand.....

 

EXPANDED METAL MESH. (directional slip resistant mesh used on catwalks/ high rise walking surfaces.)

It lets water and other media pass through freely and since the metal is expanded in a set direction it would work almost like a miniature duct directing air into the fins.

You may have to braze/ weld it on there.

This would allow you to put heavy gauge mesh, not glorified window screen material. (something that could stop a horribly misplaced squirrel @ 120 MPH)

 

I've been thinking about putting the mesh directly on top of the coolers so as to disperse the force of impact across a greater surface, but I don't know how that would perform as well as look.

If you're going to paint it black you can get away with a lot. I picked up some galvanized 1/4" screen from the Depot and painted it black 5 or 6 years ago. Cheap, and it is made from thin wire. You can hardly see that it is there and it has remained black all this time. Some of these more decorative meshes block more air than they permit. Click through the pics for a high-res version.

you can just make out the mesh in front of the intercooler end tanks... but you have to look hard.

 

Your local Michael's store will has aluminum mesh used for modeling - it even comes in black. It was a little pricey at $18 bucks but I had a 40% coupon - they're fairly easy to come by.

Used hot glue to attach it and it's pretty damn strong.
