Calling out to all V Mount owners
 

Whats up guys and gals, I recently had my car rebuilt and she is finally back on the road after over 1 year of work put into it. During this process I had a RX7store v mount kit installed which to my regret had to pull the AC unit out. I thought I wouldn't need it but during the last few weeks of grueling heat waves I am reconsidering to install my AC unit back into the car.

If you own a FD with a V mount setup and retain your AC unit please share your setup, any help will be appreciated. I understand there will be some custom fabrications needed with brackets made and each V mount setup is different from one another, I just want an idea of what needs to be done and options for placement.

How much room is there between intercooler and radiator, by the way the picture shows it doesnt look like they might be enough room to install the ac condenser.

can you post a pic of the setup thru the front bumper showing the radiator opening?

Is your car the one with the radiator end tank visibly showing in the bumper opening? If so was the AC condenser the cause? I've always wondered why that particular angle/placement was chosen.

Thanks for the pics, I'm in the middle of making my own V-mount setup, i have rad and intercooler plus ducting done, all i have left is fabrication a couple new flexible lines to get my ac running, and just like you did I'm planning on using the a/c condenser as a splitter.

On my setup i used 1/8 aluminum for the ducting, and i welded to the intercooler, now all the intercooler with ducting just slide in into place.

That looks nice, must be another cym car in thinking of. I wish I had ac with my v mount.

has anyone been having trouble with their ac setup b/c it is stacked on top of their radiator? i.e. airflow blockage or higher water temps?

Yes, you will have higher coolant temps running the AC with the condensor parked over the radiator as myself and others have done. However, real world experience here in AZ for me is 93 to 95C water temps (freeway cruising) on days with ambient near 110F (88 to 91C without running the AC in similar conditions). On similar days with my old Peter Farrell stock mount I'd be hard pressed to keep my water temps under 100C (210F).

Next to impossible (IMO) to find another place to mount the condensor where it would get adequate airflow. If anyone has better ideas or has tried something different that works, please post up the info!

SWAT81... cooling with your current setup will improve significantly if you design some airtight ducting to seal off the sides of your radiator/intercooler setup to direct more flow both cores. It makes a significant improvement (IMO).

hmmm, my current water temps range from 85~89 tops, it rarely goes up to 89 unless I'm in stop and go traffic under the sun. I have been suggested to have an additional set of fans installed on the condensor for more airflow, however I don't know how I feel about that. I was told that the Nightsport setup for retaining the AC lines and placement for the condensor is great. I'm also open to suggestions as the weather in NYC has also been getting crazy where temps go up to 100+ out doors.

I actually have my condenser elevated about 2" in the front tapering back and meets the top of the radiator core. The A/C works great thus far in this hot Utah weather.

This looks like a set up I can go for, I'm planning to have IRP fabricate brackets and install my AC setup. I'm sure these photos will be a huge help for ideal angle and placement. If you dont mind will you be able to show me how your lines are installed?

I know sometimes the condenser gets mounted parallel/flat to the ground, on the underside of the car...

Don't ask me. I just know some people mount their condenser there, e.g. these Porsche guys.

Perhaps it's possible to put a cover over it, maybe with some shallow scoops to direct airflow up through the condenser fins?

^ Seems like that will only work in conjunction with a rear mounted condenser on that car. How does it cool when the car is not moving? I do not see a fan.

That definitely looks like a terrible idea, one speed bump or ramp to a gas station will rip it right off. Cooling on stop and go traffic also sounds like a big issue as well.

A;so, to work effectively, a condenser has to have a top and bottom. mounting flat or near flat would only cause it to be a VERY inefficient unit.

Hey guys, it wasn't my idea - these Porsche guys have been doing this for awhile.

However, I don't think it's a "terrible" Idea just because we're all unfamiliar with it...

I'm sure it could be executed nicely, perhaps with a low profile fan and some sort of ducting. Hell, maybe I'll try to do something like this when I put my car back together. Just need to get the car up on the lift to see what kind of space is avail...
