Calling all exhaust exp. just got an RX7 from an auction, but have a coupl questions?
I just purchase a 93 RX7 from an auction, so there are a few problems with it. This is the first one I have ever had, so I don't know much about it. I have quite a bit of mechanical experience, but am no expert by any means.
I have a couple of question regarding the exhaust and that is that it was stolen or removed from the vehicle before it got to me. My question is the turbos and headers are still on the car but no downpipe from the headers, no exhaust, or muffler. I am anxious to see if the car is going to start since I just got the ignition fixed, I am not planning on driving it just letting it run for a few seconds, but I am afraid of damaging anything because of the missing exhaust parts.
Does anyone know if starting it will harm my car? Or should I just wait until I get the downpipe and exhaust on?
Also When I got the car it was about a quart away from the Low mark on the dipstick, is that safe???? The manual says it needs only 3.7 quarts so I was of course concerned, having prior experiences with ceasing engines....
Any help would be great!!
THanks,
Loren

Yeah
I got ***** to get it cuz I got ***** to want to own an RX7 bad no matter what. I guess anyone who owns a rotory vehicle has to have *****, because there are so different. Well anyways I think I got more confidence cuz, even if I had to replace the engine and transmission I would still come out ahead.. So I am worried about the engine, but well could make plans to rebuild it or put a new one in.
Hey also do the rx7 come stock with cross-drilled rotors, or is that aftermarket???

Zyon13B, thanks for all the help man, much appreciated

Well anyways since I am on the subject, since I have to replace the whole exhaust what would you guys recommend 2" or 2 1/2". And one or two exhausts. I am going to run it straight to the muffler, with no cat or other junk, until I get busted for it. I know that having no back pressure whatsoever on turbos is a good thing. Also any recommendations on where I could get a downpipe, I have no idea how it is set up but it doesn't seem to complicated to get it fabricated.

Did you get the one at iaai in Seattle?
If you run it for a few seconds without the DP you'll be fine. I'm not sure what you mean by "headers", there is nothing on the car that looks like a header. Maybe you mean exhaust manifold and turbos are in place?
Almost all the aftermarket exhausts for the FD are 3". If you run a straight exhaust with no cat, just a muffler your motor will last a few days before you ping it. Read up around here, seriously and welcome to the RX7 Club

I mean will it just not work, or will the ecu just be shooting out a check engine code all the time and thats the worst. Or why would I need an aftermarket?
Oh yeah I also forgot since I am missing those parts, can you tell me how many oxygen sensors I am missing too????

Yes to all the above. I am not going to argue about the engine pinging cuz I don't know much about rotories except the basics, so I am going to go with you on that. But as a newbie might ask my 300zx twin turbo has testpipes and it hasn't had a problem?? Is the rotary that much different when it comes to exhausts...

I think it would work, but you would have raw exhuast shooting out to the bay wall that's about 5" away. I think by "headers" he means the turbo manifold. Running without a cat on the stock ECU you will blow the motor, if it's not blown already.
Yeah were the two turbos are and the piping for it, whatever its called
. Then theres like a place for the exhaust. I have no Idea why someone would want to take that unless it was made of gold, or it was custom and they had another FD to put it on
.
Well the engine does crank so that is a good sign I think
???? Plus from what I can tell the engine looks rebuilt because the block was freshly painted red, like they would normally do after a rebuild.
I know that isn't unusual because I here the rotary needs rebuilding every 100,000 miles.
I did searches so feel free to beat me up if I am asking to many newbie questions..

go to the classified section here on the board and buy yourself a downpipe, stock cat and a cat-back exhaust. if you prefer your car on the quiet side, look for the racing beat cat-back exhaust. you probably don't want to run a test pipe or mid pipe as we call them here till your car is sorted out. plus its loud!
rx7store.net and gothamracing.com are great place for performance parts.
get stock parts from malloy mazda.
do a search and read a lot.

Park the car. Read this forum and the links in the newbie sticky. Search for posts in the forum under "reliablity", "mod order", etc. You have a lot to learn about these cars to run the car safely, especially when you are missing things as in your case.
Just to make sure, here's the links to sites you should read. Some of the info is old, like the 3-mod rule, but in general, very good info.

He is 100% correct on leaving it alone right now, you have alot to learn.
Does the 300Z have a MAF? The FD doesn't, it has speed density, that means when you put on that straight exhaust the boost will go up and the fuel won't. BOOOM. Seriously it is just THAT easy.
Yeah you guys are right I do got a lot more learning to do, good thing I put myself in the position were I'll have to. Well thanks for all the help, if you guys have any more suggestions please let me know.
And yes the z car does have a maf sensor.

Good question
. No it didn't, it just cranks but it could be a number of things. I am starting with the gas, never know could be empty. Then I'll check the ignition, to see if it produces a spark from the distributor. I'll definetly let you guys know if it does cuz I have a strong feeling I am going to have to ask for more help on it whether it does or not start. Hopefully you guys wont mind.

I knew I had a bad feeling about saying distributor.

So with that exhaust set up I was talking about doing, or purty much any exhaust set up. Coudn't I just run a manual or electric boost controller, and adjust it to factory or a little over factory settings and still be safe without detonating the engine.
And also which of the two do you guys recommend over the other.
