CA Smog: FD Trouble getting an RPM reading
Hello, I'm trying to get my FD to pass California smog and several smog shops have told me they can't get an RPM reading on my motor. (both with the wand and then when connecting to the spark plugs the readings go way high to 3000rpms when it's really only at 950) Any body have any ideas? By the way, this is only in test mode when they are trying to get the rpm reading.
Any input appreciated, thanks

I've had that issue once. It was reading too high, so they shifted to a higher gear so the RPM's would drop. The second time was with a wand, and it worked flawlessly. FWIW he pointed the wand right next to the stock elbow. And yes, I passed both times with FLYING colors
They would start by placing a magnetic sensor on my hood. Well it wouldn't stick to my aluminum hood.
Then he tried to clamp on to a plug wire to get a signal. My 10 mm Magnacor wires are to wide to fit inside the clamp.
Next he tried to plug into my cigarette lighter. I took that out years ago to install a manual cockpit adjustable boost controler **** in that spot.
Finally he tried to install alligator clamps to my battery. I have a Odyssey dry cell battery with a insulated copper bar connected to the fuse holder. No + post to clamp on to. Dude was getting pissed, I thought it was funny.
I told him the Alternator post was a good + source.
I have to go through this every 2 years.
