a/c questions

Well, I took my car into the shop to have the A/C looked at (it's not cold, ie, it has no freon!) They told me that I have a leak in my evaporator coil. I called Mazda and they first told me that the coil would be $190. Then they renegged and told me that it would $411.30! They said that the $190 part was for the RX-7s with optional A/C (?) I didn't know that A/C was an option on RX-7s!? Anyways, does anybody know if the cheaper part will work? Or, does anybody know if I can use a used coil from a 94/95 (which used R134a)? Sorry, but I don't know anything about air conditioners. If not, and I have to buy the $400 part, then I'm looking at about an $800-$1000 job!

Yeah I found that thread when I searched, but it doesn't really answer my question:

Can I use the evaporator from any 3rd gen, or only from a 93 or only from one that had factory A/C?

Ask the dealer that you went to for the parts numbers from both and see what they say. I think that they may be tring to take you for a ride. Also, call other places and try to find one for a second opinion. I don't think that there is a difference.

There were two different AC systems used in the '93 cars (probably the others too, but as I own a '93, its the one I know). There was the "factory-installed" aka Nippon Denso AC, and the so-called "port-installed" aka MANA AC. The compressor, evaporator and receiver/dryer are all different, not sure about the condenser or anything else. GENERALLY speaking, Touring models had factory AC while all others had the other one, but that's not universally true. The easiest way to tell is to look at the top of your receiver/dryer tank...the configuration of the lines going in and the sight glass are different...I think the FSM shows pictures that describe these differences.

I do know that the evaporator for the two systems is physically different. I do NOT know if the MANA evaporator will fit where the factory unit used to sit, but I would not assume that it will work.

OK, so if I buy a used evaporator from the same model and year as my car, I should be okay, right?
