Question A/C kills my motor, any suggestions????

When I sit at a light or wait for the car to cool down, after about a minute, it stalls out and dies. Kind of embarassing, but mainly concerns me since I am getting a heat factor with my radiator and I need to run my A/C to have the fans blowing.

Anyway of determining the problem??

Also, the fans only kick on when A/C is running, none other time; park lights on or when the temp starts to get hot.

this can be true with any of the accessories... what is happening is that there is a clutch on the pulley that grabs and lets go of the pulley... same thing as the tranny clutch... what is happening is the clutch is probibly old or worn out and its sticking.. that would cause it to put some tension on the belt that is spinning it.. thus, slowing down the motor when you are at a stop and the rpm gets low enough and shuts off your car.. i had the same problem with mine only mine was the smog pump clutch that was getting stuck..

and if you have a stock computer, thats how the fans work.. people have done the fan mod and replaced the thermosensor but if you have a aftermarket ECU like the Apexi, you can program when the fan's come on..

good luck!

I would do a compression check on the engine. How many miles on your engine? My 91 vert was doing the same thing with my A/C on. That engine just recently blew. With low compression, these engines can easily stall.

I am having the same EXACT problem for over 6 months, when you come to a stop put it in neutral and it will not stall. I have an automatic though.

Whats your "heat factor"? More than likely running the A/C heats up the condensor not allowing cool air to the radiator, add the extra load on the engine from the compressor and your engine temps will be higher than not running the A/C at all.

Any way, you running the stock computer or an aftermarket?

mine does the same thing since i switched to the PFC. of course i havent had it tuned and am just running a base map.

an easy solution is to remove the A/C relay. then you can turn the a/c on. the fans kick on full speed, but the comrpessor isn't running.

conversely if you the PFC WITH datalogit you can have the fans kick in sooner.

I'm running the stock ECU, but running the A/C at idle allows my fans to turn on, otherwise they never do. I will probably replace the relays when I get them....but I'm starting to worry.
I double-check the radiator cap today and noticed that I was slightly low, coolant was visible up top, but about 2" below the filler neck/radiator top. I checked the oil cap and noticed milk.

do you guys think that by raising the tps idle to say 1000 or 1100 this would solve the problem?

You've got a much larger problem than the car stalling with the A/C on.. You need to fix your fans before you cook your motor....... I'd start trouble shooting the fan relays. You know at least one of the four works if the fans come on with the A/C, so you could ground that one in the meantime so the fans runs all the time.
