a/c issues: do I need a new compressor?
My freon is completely fully charged and not leaking, and I can hear and see the compressor working, but I get absolutely no cold air. Is it time for a new one, and if so, a couple of questions:
1. do I need a specific model year compressor to replace my original one (1994 touring) or is any compressor from any fd compatible?
2. can my compressor be rebuilt rather than buying a brand new one for big bucks or buying someone's used one without knowing if it'll work or for how long?
3. How difficult is it to change the compressor? I've changed my own power steering pump without much trouble...is this much more difficult?
4. Anyone got a good compressor they wanna let go of?
Thanks guys,
Ian

u need to put gauges on it to see if it is compressing. should be a 3 to 1 ratio high to low.
also how do u know it is full. it could be low and cycling on the low side cutout.
and any fd compressor will work. and it is easyer than the power steering pump to change.

Just because the compressor is engaging does not mean that you have sufficient freon or R134a for cooling. You need a gauge set to determine your charge. The fault is unlikely to be the thermoswitch under the dash because if that fails it stops the compressor from engaging.
