A/c -Heater Fan --Serviceable?

I read in some old threads that you can pull the blower motor without taking out the dash.

We're having some noise coming from the fan and hope to find "junk" in the squirrel cage. Anything else serviceable in there? FSM makes it look like it's just the fan and actuator.

Thanks

yes. remove the glove box.

The blower is all the way to the right (passenger fender)
order goes like this

Heater core | A/C core | Fan blower

you will need to remove the A/C core first. theres 2 10mm bolts, one on the top and one on the bottom. once you remove those the core will slide down.

now to remove the blower there are 3 10mm bolts. one on the top (taking off the plastic on the side of dash may help as it gives you more visibility. one bolt on the top, one on the bottom, and one on the side by the ECU area.

You have to disconnect all the harnesses connected to them as well (given)

thanks-- I thought I could just take down the fan enclosure and leave the a/c unit alone?

no disrespect bubbles, but i just pulled my blower motor for the same reason the op is, and i was able to get to it just by pulling the ecu, and three hex-head screws. its a pita and i was literally upside down in the car to see everything, but it can be done. break out the search-foo op, https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...blower+removal

asianguy02,
when you pulled yours, were you able to do anything productive with it out?
Did it require cleaning or lubricating or did you have to replace the motor or switch?
Just trying to plan what to get out of the pull.
thanks

Sorry Mui, you're wrong on this one .

Yep, there are 3 hex head screws holding the blower motor in, with one electrical connector and a rubber hose for a drain. VERY easy to get out of there. The hex on the screws is 8mm, I usually use an 8mm socket.

Undo the 3 screws, drop the assembly out. Most likely it will be full of crap, clean it out and clean out anything up in the housing that you can get to through the hole the fan came from and you're good.

You don't have to remove the glove box or anything. MIGHT have to remove the passenger kick panel (the panel that covers the ECU) but that's it.

I've cleaned MANY blower motors, they do accumulate a lot of trash over time.

Really nothing to lube on them, it's a sealed bearing. If it's really ratty or doesn't turn freely just get a used blower motor.

Dale

listen to dale on this, i ended up removing the kick panel and the ecu just to make it easier because i have large enough hands it would have been a pita otherwise

word of advice, pull you seat first it will give you a way better angle to work on the part without killing your neck! ive done it the hard way, it amazing to see how much space you have to work once the seats are out.

The FSM says to undo the "intake actuator" before the fan motor?
Sounds like from Dale and asianguy2 that I can just drop the fan without messing with the actuator. Also, can't tell from the FSM how the fan motor is "connected" electrical wise.
So when I drop it, is it still tethered by some wiring harness that doesn't show in the drawing?

connection is behind the kick panel, its quick to pull the one plug out and it should just unbolt and drop right out

Slightly off topic but is the blender door for the ac/heat attached to the blower or is it located somewhere else? I just had my ac serviced, refilled with R12A and the ac isn't very good nor is the hear very hot. I replaced the circuit board and the temp blender potentiometer in the center console area so I've checked those off the list. My assumption now is the blender door is not fully opening or closing, keeping the cold air from getting fully thru. If not this, then back to check the entire ac system.

So, can I get to the blender door and the actuator by pulling the blower?

Found out the blender door is more in the driver side footwell so my plan is to next week crawl under there and to remove to access hatch to inspect the linkage and go from there. I then need to go to the blower side to remove the fan speed control to inspect and repair if necessary so my fan speed #2 works again. If I fail with all of this then it's off to someone more knowledgable to remove the dash and to repair the blender door.
