Wow, you have lots of research to do...

first you wanna take a boost gauge with you and verify that the boost is what it's supposed to be (10-8-10) search if you don't know.

If the engine is nearing the 80k mark you will probably need a rebuild soon...something to look for is excessive smoking on startup...some is normal as most of us experience that for the first couple of minutes...but when you car has a hard time idling on startup and smokes like hell then it usually means that the coolant o-rings are going...(rebuild time...there is a temporary fix for that but probably would be best to factor in the cost of a rebuild if you are going to purchase it)

Then you should have someone do a compression test on the motor.....you have two rotors with three faces each...you will get back six numbers from your test...numbers are usually from 7 - 9...9 being excellent and 7 being ****. the results will look something like this 8.2, 8.5, 8.1 - 8.3, 8.1, 8.0......each number represents one of three faces of a rotor and the compression it kicks back...

So that plus oil leaks and coolant leaks...

Make sure you get to start the car when it's cold because once it been running for a while and you start it warm you usually don't see white smoke from it...

Anyone else want to contribute or criticize my post?

Also be sure to take it for a nice test drive.. Look for a bref rev stutter at around 3-3.5k rpm.. If you consistantly get it just walk away from the car. 90% of the time its not fixable.
