I will put a vote in for The Peter Ferrel Supercars cat-back. It came on my car and sounds clean and the fitment is really nice. tip is not too big either.

PFSus Vulgaris Cattusbackus

Been there, done that. It droned horribly at highway speed and backfired continually. It coated the back of the car with "smoot", and it looked like a pearl-handled, nickel-plated pimp .32 hanging under the car. In other words, I hated it.

I bought the polished RB twin tip and painted it with hi-temp flat back to match my OEM cat-back. You can't really tell the difference, except for the RB stampings on the tips and their slightly larger size.

i think the Peter Farell Sucks echaust system looks really cheapo and ugly. i hate tips that are not cut at an angle. it just looks like polished piping out the back of the car. no style whatsoever.

i have heard it in person. it is too droney. i was cruising next to an FD with this exhaust and the droning was starting to **** me off, and that was after no longer that 45 seconds of side-by-side cruising. i didnt hear eccessive backfiring, but ill take jim's word for it.

i have not yet heard of one person who has dissliked the RB Dual Tip.

Word of caution - I would stay away from the HKS Super Drager exhaust unless you know that the unit is manufactured AFTER 1997.5. The one's before that are not a straight through design and actually flow worse than stock. HKS had to do this to advertise the Super Drager as CARB approved at the time. I was getting a steady 11psi of boost on the stock exhaust. In 1997, when I put on an HKS super drager, it immediately dropped my boost down to 8psi with 9psi spikes. To utilize the scientific method, I swapped back to the stock exhaust and got 11psi again. HKS has improved the Super Drager since then.

I run an RB dual tip and couldn't be happier. Doesn't get any unnecessary attention, it flows well, and it's nice and throaty at WOT. Also, if I'm correct, RB exhausts are manufactured by RS-R Japan. RS-R is well known for making very high quality exhausts with effective sound deadening material. Apex'i exhausts are built with inferior sound deadening fibers packed into the muffler. That's why they are so loud. You could probably get better sound suppression from a Magnaflow muffler rather than an Apex'i unit. Running the Apex'i silencer will quiet down the exhaust significantly, but it imposes a huge exhaust restriction when the silencer is installed. The Trust/GReddy units aren't bad. If you've got the money and can swallow the odd looking tips they use, the RE Amemiya units are very well made.

Dual or single tip?

I was looking at the RB exhaust...I have a couple questions:
Does the single or dual tip flow better? Are all exhausts cat-back? Like the one for sale on the RX7club store doesn't say cat back...if it doesn't say is it safe to assume?
How hard is it to install a cat back? I have to get in there to put my DP on, and I figured I might wait and do the exhaust at the same time...any thoughts?
Thanks
-Dave

Re: Dual or single tip?

No idea on whether single tip flows better than dual. I doubt there's much of a difference. Most exhausts are catback unless advertised otherwise. That's a pretty safe assumption. If you're looking at the RB exhausts, those are all catback. Installing a catback is easy. All you need are 2 14mm wrenches and possibly some lubricant to pull the hanging brackets out of the rubber mounts and to lubricate the bolts and nuts for easy removal.

The DP is harder to do and it doesn't really matter whether you do that together w/ a catback or wait. I think the only installation step you'll save by doing them together is lifting the car on a jack.

No mention of the SR Motorsports dual catback here... is anyone running that right now? I was considering one of their performance packages but never heard anything concerning their CB/MP combo... tried to do a search, but 'SR' is to small and 'srx7.com' returned nothing relevant...

Well, I will speak up for HKS.

I have an HKS cat back on my car, and I really like it.

I don't know the model name, but it is a oval canister exhaust with a single 4" tip. It might not be exactly 4"...but close. It is on the large side, but I think it looks pretty good.

I know for a fact that the HKS flows well. When I bought the car the previous owner had a stupid midas hack job single-in, single-out muffler on the car. I couldn't get more than 6 psi on the second turbo.

I put the HKS on, and now I get 11-8-11. I couldn't believe it, but it is true. I tried everything to fix my boost problem..including new hose couplings, HKS down pipe, and checking the vacuum lines. Nothing helped get more than 6 psi on the second turbo.

Then, I took off the midas hack special, and the boost was perfect. The cat back on the car had been hack off about 12" behind the muffler, and a smaller diameter pipe was installed with weld to fill the difference.

I don't mind the sound of the HKS either. It does NOT drone at highway speed, and sounds good under WOT. It does pop a little bit when the car is cold.....

Overall, I am very happy with it. If any one wants pictures, let me know...

Later,
Patrick
