to buy? or not to buy?

Hey fellow Rx7 fans!

Ok, you may have noticed that I am new to this board, but you may also have noticed that I have posted many topics and posts on this board as well. This is mainly because of my love towards the rx7s. I really want to buy the rx7, but I am very scared that something bad will end up happening to the car because of something stupid i forget to do. Here is the senerio:

I am 17, turning 18 in april. I will be going off to college this fall, and therefore need a car. I want the car to be 'fast and sexy' so to speak. The rx7 really fits this description. However, there is a lot of responsibility that goes along with owning the car, since it is to the best of my knowledge, hard to maintain. I am ready to very much learn how to take car of the car, and learn how to mod it correctly so as to create an awsome street and drag car.

My question is, do you recommend this car to me in my situation. Or do you think it may be too much work for me? Also, if the car was to suddenly die on me, i would be left with taking the bus

IMHO, in your current situation you'd be better off with a reliable car that you can use without having to shell a lot of dollars out to keep it running and running well..

As much as this is a good looking car and things of the sort, the money and time investment is definetly large..something you might not be able to manage during your student years. Perhaps after graduation..

If I was going off to college I probably wouldnt have a car at all let alone an rx7. Dont bring that stress upon yourself..... Im 18 too but decided I didtn want to go to school yet. If I go to art school it will be after the cars already paid off.

I'm 20 and a junior at RPI in Troy, NY. No ******* way in hell would I ever bring such a car to school with me. There was a fella here with a CYM FD and it was a ******* egg magnet! I even saw the car with a plastic bag where the rear window should have been. Depending on what college you are going to you need to factor in jealousy. Who ever owned it had the ***** to keep it here for 2 years. I haven't seen it since.

DAMN STRAIGHT!!!

Oh yeah, don't forget to factor in insurance costs. I also want to learn how to maintain my car, but things are moving very slowly. My dad bought me an FD and puts it on his insurance policy. It costs him less that $1000 a year. If it were in my name it cost over $3000. So you must be asking "So now you have to pay to store the car, too?" That's where connections come in. A friend of my father's is a sort sports car enthusiast. Since his wife died he's had a vacant spot in his garage that he said I could use while I was away at school. He owned both a 1st and a 2nd gen. 7. He also will take the car out once a week for me.

Pr0pz to my parents, they are ******* awesome!

Just some things to consider. Don't be discouraged, just be warned.

I completely forgot about the insurance, it will definetly be crazy high if you have it on yourself..even for people older than you it isn't any better..at 24, I was quoted around $900 a year for mine. Definitly better than most..

I'm 20, and I've had my FD since I started college, though its only been running about half the time. Thank god I've been able to borrow my dad's car the other half of the time. If you have a back up for when its being a bitch, go for it, but realize that its most likely not going to be on the road all the time unless you really know your stuff and have bottomless pockets.

I'm somewhat confused... lets say you get a car with a new engine in it, and have the knowledge of the car from this site, rob's site and other sites that describe the car accurately why is the car still not reliable? I was under the impression that the car can be very reliable, but have to have a caring owner who knows about the car. Is this incorrect? It seems like sometimes I read posts/talk to owners who are daily drivers (who obviously know about the car) who say the car is fine, just take care of it, and others who say, man stay away from rx7s. I'm in the same boat as the person who started this thread and i'm not sure what to do.

? 1. Define high maintance. Warm up, cool down, watch what should be a new temp gauge, all that stuff... I'd still like to know exactly what you need to do to this car.

?2. How often do you have to pay to have someone fix this car?

?3. Someone who drives the car daily, will you please private message me. Thank you

chris
