Are you currently fading the brakes on the track? If so, are you running track pads?

^yep, no reason to upgrade unless you're eating rotors on a regular basis. For the money, it's hard to beat the rz setup on all 4 corners (~$1500) and 2 piece rotors are available. Stoptech is also a popular and proven setup. Howard Coleman will be chiming in soon to direct you to the new racing brake kit in the suspension/wheel/brake forum

Well, in that case, you are just upgrading for looks.

IMO, the Stoptech front/99 RZ rear or the 99 RZ front/rear are great setups. And no, you don't buy them off ebay.....sigh.

Just paint your stock calipers and get some slotted rotors if your just trying to make them look better. Why spend 1500 + for something you will never need/use.

Drilled or slotted rotors do not improve performance with modern brake pads. If your brakes seem poor, you have a malfunctioning braking system or are running shitty tires. Fix the problem before trying to make "upgrades". It probably just needs a good bleed of the system.

Your current rotors can lock up the wheels, can't they? (Assuming the ABS wouldn't kick in, that is) "Better" rotors can't improve on that.

Compared to what????????????? IIRC, The only stock 90's car that could outbrake an FD is a 911 Turbo
Seriously, though, like Rynberg says, make sure you don't have a brake problem before you waste your money...

So what type/kind of pads are needed when the rotors are upgraded to slotted/drilled rotors?

Pads don't really have anything to do with the rotor type (rotor material maybe, but not type). You need to pick pads/rotors that are designed for what you plan to use the car for... So with that, what do you plan to use your car for?

I think a rotor turn (if they're in spec) and new EBC Greens (reds if you think you'll use em- pbly not) and new brake fluid- not DOT5, 4 too(?) will probably solve your braking woes.

Just my .02c

I'm betting you have shitty tires. Otherwise, just bleed your brakes--get any air out of the system.

If you're looking for a slight upgrade for the street (mostly in feel honestly) without braking the bank (pun intended), you might what to check out the Centrix direct replacement rotors with some Hawk HPS pads and SS lines. Talking like $350-$400. The Centrix rotors aren't drilled or slotted so they'll be easy on your pads. Just be careful with the whole bleeding process, there seems to be a bunch of people with residual air in the system.

modern brake pads do not outgas like older pads. drilled rotors used to give that gas someplace to go so it wouldnt get stuck between the pad and the rotor. there is no longer a need for that so drilled rotors are pretty much just for looks. not to mention any drilled rotors you can buy are cheaply made and have stress risers that were formed in the drilling process making it easier to crack a rotor.

like everyone said if you think the brakes are a little weak you either have crappy tires, or something is wrong with the brake system. if you dont know when the last time the brake fluid was changed i would suggest flushing the fluid (do the clutch while you are at it), if you dont know how i would suggest paying a shop to do it because it seems a lot of people here get more air into the system than they take out lol. get decent pads like hawk hps, porterfield r4-s, etc. unless your stock lines are damaged you should save the money rather than buying steel lines. steel lines are pretty pointless unless you track the car.

knock knock...

for those who haven't bumped into an on-topic thread in the suspension section "FD...new brake options" and are interested in the subject i suggest you read the first post which describes why RacingBrake has recently accumulated various patents and the next to last page which shows pictures of RacingBrake's FD brake system. the purpose designed new 4 wheel brake system was just a proposal on my part to RB and we now have something very special.

thanks RB,

howard coleman
