Brake lights on even after shutdown

Howdy,

My neighbour comes over and tells me my brake lights are on. I go out and sure as hell they are. I tried disconnecting the battery but no change. Any ideas where i should look? Also, i'm getting power with negative terminal off but grounding wires connected? Does this sound right? Any input appreciated.

Dave

There is no possible way your brake lights can be on with the battery disconnected! (unless you have a power capacitor in your stereo install)

sure its not the reflection from the lights?

The only sure way of killing power to the system is unhooking both battery leads, just pulling the ground doesn't eliminate power feeding back through some other device (especially if its faulty) I know you would think if he pulled the main ground it should kill it but there may be something on his car (alarm who knows that is still tied to the battery) a completely stock car the ground should be enough.

well today i drove her to work and completely forgot to go back out and get it fixed. Battery was drained jumpstarted her and still the same. I tried checking the handbrake switch and it turns out fine. Disconnected ABS for a couple of minutes...still no luck. Its the weekend so will get cracking on it and hopefully i get it fixed.

Also JONSKI thanks for the thread. Specifically which rubber part did you replace? Appreciate it mate.

Handbrake shouldn't have any effect on the rear brake lights. Perhaps the brake switch on the brake pedal is stuck on or broken so it stays on ? ? ?

That would be my first guess.
