brake cylinder hone
Has anyone used a brake cylinder hone on the front caliper cylinder bores?
I'm rebuilding my calipers, the bores could use some smoothing, but I don't know if the hone can be used on the front calipers without taking the caliper halves apart.
Here is a link to a picture of the tool

To answer my own question, no, the tool cannot flex to hone the front calipers - without taking the calipers apart...
So the next question is, can I split the front caliper into halves by removing the bridge bolts? The FSM states numerous times to NEVER remove the bridge bolts.

I agree - you should NEVER split the calipers.
I've rebuilt the front brakes in my FC before, which are fundamentally identical to the FD front brakes. Just put the new seals, piston, etc. all in there and everything worked great. Make sure to ONLY use brake fluid for cleaning, lubrication, etc. - anything else and you'll have problems.

Thanks Dale, I just hate going to the trouble to polish the pistons and replace the seals - and then leave the bores with visible scarring. I suppose what is really important is the seal <--> piston interface, which should be much improved.
I've used only brake fluid with the exception of caliper cleaner for cleaning. I blasted everything out with compressed air to ensure the cleaner had all evaporated before reassembling.
