Question BOV and WASTEGATE

Heya

I'm wondering if you can put a BOV and wastegate at the same time. I know there is a stock BOV and i'm assuming there's a stock wastegate.

I would like to purchase an aftermarket BOV and wastegate and fit it in my stock engine. What other mods must i get to fit the BOV and WG in?

BTW my car is stock except for a full exhasut system and a K&N airfilter.

Your stock FD already have both a wastegate and a "BOV".

The wastegate is actually integrated into the turbo assembly, and with stock turbos you cannot replace it, you can just port it. Porting a internal WG enlarges the hole so that it can control boost better. The only time when you will be replacing a WG is if you upgrade to a single turbo which does not have an internal WG built into the turbo assembly. In that case you would go with an EXTERNAL wastegate. The external wastegate is mounted to the exhaust manifold, and it can handle boost better.

For BOVs you have a air bypass valve. Most people define a blow off valve as a valve that vents to the atmosphere (open air). While stock "BOVs" found on stock turbos cars vent the air back into the intake stream.

EDIT: actually it is possible to "change" out an internal wastegate, but due to space limitations it is hard to do in an FD. You just weld the internal WG shut, and open up a hole in the manifold and mount a flange for an external WG. It's actually more complicated then that, but that's the general idea. People with turbo DSMs do this, and so do a few Greddy turboed Honda/Acuras.

If you want to learn more about turbo systems, buy the book Maximum Boost by Corky Bell. It covers a lot of the basic fundemantals of turbo systems, and you would learn a lot from it. You can buy it from an Barnes and Nobles store or go online on www.bn.com or www.amazon.com
