Put this in the good/bad guy forum. Not the 3rd gen forum.

Did it shift before it was installed?

Did you check it at all before you installed it ?? Spin the input shaft and shift the gears to see if the output shaft spun and all the gears engaged ? ? ? ?

If he doesnt have sense enough to post this in the right forum, what makes you think he would have thought to check it before installing it?

dude. . . what should you do??? take it back out. . . there is no miracle juice out there that unfreezes manual transmissions. more than likely, he sold it to you after he did a monstrous burn-out and it bound up on him mid-happiness. you got his trash. it can be repaired, but itll cost im sure.

thats the problem, the mechanic said it will probably cost more to repair it than to jsut buy another used tranny. i have 2 trannies and he said between the 2 he could probably make one work but it's going to cost jsut as much as a used good tranny and he doesnt really want to mess with it.

There's no guarantee he could make a "good" one out of your two trashed trannies, either. Hate to say this, but you're basically SOL until you can find another good used transmission (or you take your two apart to figure out exactly what is damaged).

I noticed in the Good/Bad Guy section that you posted in an old thread on this justwantorace guy. You might've avoided this situation if you'd done a little research beforehand...

He's not blowing smoke. The price of new gears (which if you have wear on any of the bearing faces of the shafts, is necessary) is a few hundred dollars. The price of a synchro and bearing kit from a non-Mazda source is $350 I think, and from Mazda it's like $500+. Maybe the problem is as simple as a piece of synchro broken loose and wedged between the gears, maybe it's much worse. Add in labor to tear down and rebuild the gearbox itself, and it's simpler to get a low mileage used tranny from a reputable source and install that.

In that case, you still have two trannies you can try the mix&match with and see if you can make a backup or retrieve some cost. But I've done a regular rebuild once - you'll want a couple special tools, plenty of time, and a clean, organized workspace to handle two transmissions at once. The "he doesn't want to mess with it" statement makes a lot of sense if he's not rebuilt one of these gearboxes before. Like Kento said, it's likely that any damaged hard parts will be the same ones in both trannys - the input shaft and nose of the main driveshaft usually have trouble at the bearing between them simultaneously - and buying those two shafts will run $600.

You CAN drain the tranny oil and remove the lower cover plate and inspect 1-4 gears. It will probably still be messy. You might find evidence of a problem in there, but if the bind is in the 5-R gears you can't inspect is without removing the extension housing and rear bearing plate.

I thought about it, but the cost of shipping kind of hurts the idea... Try calling Pineapple and see if they want used/core transmissions.

Plus I have little/no space to do the work - doing my one transmission was bad enough.

PS: I wonder why I got negative feedback for asking if it shifted before install. It was a simple and reasonable question.
