autometer gauges are good. The sport comp line they have look similar to stock gauges. The sport comp boost gauge I have is in psi not bar.

 

I have a autometer - it reads in psi, make sure you get one that also reads vacuum as well.

The pettit colum mount is very nice with a chrome trim ring to match the instrument cluster and the red lighting isn't too off.

i have an autometer too that i thought was great until i hooked up my pms and saw the difference in the read-out. spend the money on defi. now i'm convinced my autometer is a p.o.s., which is what i've heard from other people.

if you've read the threads on the difference between the pressure reading on the autometer and the pms legal-z the consensus was that a used cheap model autometer isn't in the same catagory as a new mid-higher priced one. I don't know what you have, but thats what was written. There should be a post in the engine management section about it I think.

 

I prefer the psi reading to the bar, I just like having more number and less hashmarks, plus most people around here seem to talk in psi, and converting back and forth isn't may favorite thing to do. FWIW, 1 Bar~14.7 psi as I recall, so if you buy a metric gauge get one that goes to at least 1.5 Bar, if not 2.0, even though you might never run that much boost, its still handy to have for those days you run higher octane and boost. i have a less than one year old carbon fiber ultra light autometer. i don't know if that's considered a cheap one or not, so i can't comment on your response. yetisoldier, let me know what it is considered.

 

VDO makes a nice gauge (OEM on some Porsches), that matches the stock gauges very well. Get an orange bulb cover for $3, for an exact match to the factory lighting.

Prices are very reasonable.

The D gauge from Defi is very high in quality, and it matches the stock gauges almost exactly in daytime and nightime. It is in bar, but learning to convert psi to bar isn't that hard.

IMO, they look better than the VDO gauges.

I agree with Adam -- the VDO gauges are nice -- and they look stock. I have the PFS unit (remarked VDO) and I like it a lot.

As for Bar vs. PSI, I prefer PSI just because most of the people here do not use the metric system (no need to convert everytime you hear PSI).

Digital vs. analog will be up to you. If you want to keep it looking stock, I would go with an analog gauge. If you want an easier to read unit (as some digital units have peak hold functions and stuff) and don't mind having a totally out of place gauge, then I would go with the digital one.

 

Legal-Z I wasn't attacking you just saying what I read. Either way I emailed Autometer to see what they have to say and should have an answer in 1-2 business days it said. I'll post what ever answer I get in return. I also asked them if different product lines of their's are more accurate than others to clear that question up too. By the way all the military vehicles I've driven have VDO gauges if I remember correctly. THought I would add that.

 

That's a load of BS...

While I'm sure there are gauges that are damaged in manufacturing, shipping, installations or other means, not all of the gauges are bad.

Many people have tested them on this forum using MityVacs and they are on the money just like the more expensive ones.

Keep in mind, the more units a company produces, the more they are likely to have more units slip through quality control. If you only manufacture 1000 gauges, and have 10 bad ones, that's not bad. However, if you use the same ratio by making 100,000 and have 1000 fail, which is worse? Neither, same ratio. You just see more of the latter because more of them are made (and obviously sold).

Simple fact, you can get a bad gauge from any company.

 

Sorry to revive an old thread, but have you guys got any pics of the VDO gauges fitted?
