twins tend to put out some heat at high boost levels...dangerous territory.

if you don't have money to spend on a new motor, my recommendation is to stay with your safe tune.

Stick with what you got and be thankful. I understand RP does some good work. I doubt you'll be able to find anyone around you that would be able to tune it for better numbers safely. In the end it's just a number and allows you nothing but bragging rights - which is nothing but BS anyway.

Worry about learning how to drive and control a high HP car instead.

If you want more power, run 15-16 psi instead of just 13. You are making pretty good power for your boost levels.

So is it correct to say that I can run 15-16psi safely and reliably on stock twins for a daily driver? I'm not going WOT every time, just when I feel the urge to pull at times. These are my mods:

Stock twins
Stock port
HKS TP
HKS RS intake
Megan DP/MP
RB dual exhaust
Greddy 3pc. IC piping kit (w/elbow)
Blitz SMIC
Dual oil cooler setup (since my FD is a touring)
Power FC
Apex'i grounding kit
120 amp alternator
ACT light flywheel
CM twin surface clutch kit
Koyo radiator
Silicon injector hose hit

I haven't dyno'd this setup yet as I'm waiting for the shop to get the datalogit.
I'm just wondering what the safest boost is that I can get away with.
I am planning on going BNRs in around 6 months or so...just wanna get as much fun out of the stock twins as possible.

15-16 psi on stock twins? Not very reliable unless you rarely get on it.

Also, you shouldn't be boosting more than 13 psi or so with the stock fuel system, especially on our 91 octane.

I ran 15 psi (on 93 octane) on my daily driver FD for about a year, but after ~10k miles (90k total) the twins were shot. I would keep the boost to around 13 or so to be safe, ESPECIALLY on crappy 91 octane. These motors can and will detonate--remember, the stock twins are puny little turbos and are out of their efficiency range at anything past 15 psi or so.

rich, i was watching your dyno video, and you said that it was dyno\'d at 19 and 21psi i believe. now it was all the same hp and tq numbers at 17 psi right? i was just wondering if bnr\'s run out of breath after 17 psi or was it just your ignition setup?

go to rx7.com they have a fuel calculator on there. it can give you a ball park figure of what injectors you would need.

Now let's get few things sorted out.....

>>the stockers cant handle 19....i think boostn7 was replacing sets often (thats what i keep hearing anyways)...i think he will chime in here.<<
**You heard wrong..... Up to 17-18psi for a year the stock turbos lasted plenty with 65k miles on them....
Replaced the front turbo once and then again when it snapped the shaft....in a year of continous racing the car @ 19-20psi of boost......never mind the dyno pulls.
Replaced from a used set I had here with unknown mileage.

>>Isn't that John D? Anything he does has to be taken and put in a separate category. He's what they call an outlier in the bell curve lol. The general consensus is at above 15psi, you're really pushing the stockers outta their efficiency range, and making them spin much faster than they were designed for. In short, they're gonna be short-lived.<<
**No secret sauce here.....I'll duplice my setup with ease.
The general consensus should be changed to ~17psi because they will make nice gains till then !!!!!!!!!

>>No problems my ***. He went through many turbos to accomplish what he did. He also had very extensive tuning and what not. Also, I may be mistaken, but I think they were beefed up a little bit, although that may have been Kevin. From what I can tell AgentSpeed wanted the hell off they dyno so he could drive his car! lol I'm sure with a little bit of time and a constant 15 psi it would have put down more power and still be reliable.
-Alex<<
**OK...how many turbos did I replace ???? BEEFED-UP !!!!! HAHAHAHAHA !!!
My extensive tuning only really started after I ported my motor and AFTER I dynoed 402rwh and 356rwt on STOCK motor. Only then I purchased my own datalogit and FJO wideband.

>>But these are made to handle 20 - 22 psi, reliably. I think that's really the whole point. You can't run stockers reliably at 16 or 17 psi, but these babies should be breathing easy at 18 or even 19, and making lots more power AND torque than the stockers. Again, reliably.<<
**as long as they're flowing thru the factory exhaust manifolds they're limited just like the stockers!!!! Once you reach a certain amount of exhaust flow you're DONE !!! I have been there:-)

>>John D had countless hours of tuning and a external wg, along with many blown up sets of twins.

**external wastegate !!!!! WTF!!!! where are you guys getting this info from????
I tried a HKS 40mm W/G to fix my boost drop problem and it lasted one night....too damn loud and boost drop was still there after I ported my motor.
Many blown up sets !!!!! wanna stop by and count them?????
I still have my "10sec twins"...I may re-install them back in the car to prove many people wrong !!!

It's funny....
I was told, "400rwh from stock motor and non-seq twins" you're nuts and dreaming !!!
Then I was told I would never trap 125mph......
Hehehe...they were wrong again....
I trapped 125mph at least 4 times.
Steph ...wanna see a 380 SAE corrected dyno sheet @ 15-16psi???
How about 365RWT from stock non-seq turbos/motor??

I've always pushed my cars to the limit and very happy to show what this little motor is capable of.....

AgentSpeed: ENJOY your HP and get us some 11sec runs:-)

Later,
Sweet! Nice post.

I'm so glad to see some good info. about the potential of our motors/turbos from someone who has actually done it, not some random poster regurgitating "forum wisdom" as if it was law...

I read that Walbro fuel pumps aren't that reliable. I'm just trying to get a few opinions here but for my setup, which fuel pump should I go for and what size injectors would y'all recommend for primaries and secondaries? Thanks in advance!

I had the Walbro fuel pump and 1300's. Everybody says this and that but I never had any issues. My car performed like a champ. Vids can be seen at www.heathmoore.net

I have had my walbro and 1600's supporting close to 375 on the stock twins for 10 months/5000 miles w/ no problems yet..

I don't think any of you noticed "low compression rotors"... If he would have had higher compression rotors (stock) he would have made MORE POWER at those same boost levels.

Thumbs up

Sweet! That's Brooks Weisblat's car--those rear Fikses are now on my FD . Spoke to Brian Dowling about them, they have a very distinctive red colored center cap. I hope to make many more 11 second passes with them soon

we need some 1/4 mile runs of these bnrs to back up the rwhp that has been posted. Not saying anyyone is fudging the truth but 1/4 testing is the true indication of a cars power!

Sorry I can't post a 1/4 mile run, I sold the car. I also am not fudging my numbers but it doesn't upset me that you question them. In life, question everything! It was a beast and I miss the car but I've gone on to my next project.

I am the lucky new owner of Heath's FD, and I can say with certaintity that it is indeed a beast

I just ripped out the TurboXS and put a Profec B SpecII in it, Heath. The project took me most of the afternoon, but I've got a better understanding of all the wiring now too. I'm going to be tuning it for 12.5psi on low boost and 16psi on high boost!

I think they have the potential to make a high 10 second pass and trapping 125ish mph. Of course, that is with a great driver, slicks, and the proper suspension setup.
