BNR Stage 3 Owners - How Many Running Synthetic Oil?

Guys,

Just curious to know how many of you running BNR Stage 3s use synthetic motor oil. Anyone notice a difference in performance or smoking using one versus the other? Just curious!

TIA for your feedback!

The topic of synthetic vs non-synth has been argued over a good.... million times! So just search a little so you dont get people going again.

MakoRacing is right about that but I've thought it was always funny how they argue about which is better but the type of oil you use really has never made a difference except the Amsoil that was used in the 40/50's planes which contribute to why the engines are in such a good condition. Personally as long as I can get 100k miles out of my FD I'd be happy. Also look at the old 50's Volvos that were built like tanks that have gone over 2million miles. :p

Before this thread gets carried away, he's not asking about synthetic vs mineral oil in the general sense.

Trust me, this is a very specific question on an issue that directly concerns me as well (BNR Stage 3 owner)....

I have run idemitsu, amsoil and valvoline full synthetic, all in 10w30 and 20w50 with no problems. It seems that the car likes the 20w50 in the warmer summers.

I am assuming you are indirectly looking at smoking problems---many single owners experience the same problem. Make sure you have the crankcase vented to depressurize the system, helps keep any oil from backing up in the turbo and burning out the exhaust.

Hey Rich.

You have dynamic sealed stage 3's. So you can't compare the two. Their turbos are carbon sealed, which works totally different than dynamic.

I have advised everyone that have synthetics in their car to switch to a regular motor oils b/c of the Garrett carbon seal. The carbon seal does not properly seal up with synthetics.

I have built over 120 of these exact same units for 300ZX guys along with many of you FD guys and I have had no problems.

So what BNR stage 3's have the dynamic vs the carbon seals? I run Royal Purple with my stock twins, but I plan to get the BNR's in the future. Will I have to switch over to dino? Thanks!

Hey Yuichiror,

You will have to switch over to a petrolium based oil for the Garrett carbon seals to work properly.

Thanks eveyone for your recommendations. We've switched over to dino juice already, but we need to pull the IC and intake piping and clean everything thoroughly. Once we do I'll post the result. Hopefully it will turn the car from a smoke machine back into a Gen 3 beast. Brian builds a great product so we're following his instructions for now to see if it won't solve the problem.

Hey Paul.

I don't know if he is or not. How many miles does he have on his motor since he got the engine back?

Yeah, I'll post a thread soon. I can say that the numbers I hit may not be impressive in the sheer output sense, but certain facts must be taken into account -- Steve Kan tuned my car to be safe on 91 octane....AFRs are in the high 10s:1, quite a bit richer than many people run their cars. Hopefully this translates into me running 15 psi for many thousands of miles on 91 octane with no issues....
