Having a poll like this is inaccurate because anyone can go and vote, weather true or not. For example, it shows that Gotham has 3 votes that is their fault, but they have not had a single complaint from anyone. I would imagine that if someone had a problem then, then they would let the shop know. As far as I know, everyone that has had a motor built by Gotham is more than satisfied with the performance and reliability.

 

How hard is it to re-build a Rotary? i'm looking to buy a 3rd gen with between 60 and 100k on it. could i do it in my garage, and if so, what kinds of tools do i need to pull it off?

 

Time to start using the search tool. I uncovered a lot when I researched that very subject last month.

You'll need an engine hoist, air tools are a big help, mag-block dial indicator, jack and jackstands, precision straightedge to hit the big items. It can be done in a garage. Rebuilding is more involved than swapping a reman and returning your core. It also requires you to take your time and not make any dumb mistakes (that's not in everyone's composure).

I suggest buying David Turrentine's 13B R&R video to see what's involved with pulling an engine. And searching.

 

For those who posted that they blew up a Gotham-built motor and that it was our fault, I would love to hear from you .

To the best of my knowledge, this has yet to happen. I answer 99% of the phone calls here.......I'd like to think I would know about it if we had such unsatisifed customers......

well, i think people are doing it to show how invalid and bias/unfair the poll is

everyone knows that gotham has yet to drop a motor, so by them having the highest reading, it just makes it looked rigged

**** happens! Every engine builder has problems and no one is perfect. If a shop never has any problems then there not doing much business.

 

Possible consequences of using synthetic oil on my newly rebuilt rotary motor??

break it in with regular oil for the first 1500 miles, then go to town with synth. Possible consequences? Cooler running motor and turbos, quicker spool up, smoother revving, better fuel mileage, less wear on your motor and turbo internals, the list goes on and on

 

Flybye, if you live in Miami and have never heard of a Pettit motor blowing up, you haven't been paying attention. I know several, two of which I have intimate knowledge of, one in Naples an one in Ft. Lauderdale. Most of the old time third gen guys will not use Pettit to build their engines.

Like I've said, it's only what I've heard. I have no hardcore evidense to prove their engines are bulletproof, which noone's engines are bulletproof.

I don't think anyone here has a full listing of ALL the engines ever rebuilt from any 1 shop. I didn't start this thread to prove 1 shop is better than another. Word of mouth is one of the factors in determining who will lay their hands on the heart of your car, and I'm hoping these threads will help people make that choice. I'm not saying these threads are designed to ultimately tell you to choose X shop, but at least help you in making the right decision.

 

this poll is statistically screwed up. it is not set up correctly and will only result in biased results. i would be willing to say most of the time it is the drivers fault for blowing the engine.

 

flybye, I personally know of 3 people with blown motors from pettit...Thats what happens when you let someone learn how to build an engine with other peoples motors.

 

Just to let everybody know, my fd is in the shop awaiting a rebuild (blown water seal) and I'm not sure who to go with. I saw 2 2 rebuilds with port jobs from A!@#$'s rotary, and none of the port matched. 2 separate BAD jobs and I feel sorry for whoever's engines they were. I hope they get their money back. I'm very disappointed in the quality of their work and hope that they fire the guy responsible for the crackhead work they did. That being said, I need help in finding a trustworthy shop, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

I might just go with another mazda reman. My current reman lasted about 2 years without a problem(except for the oil pan issue). Are there any other problems that I should be aware of?
