Blown primary turbo? (noise)
Blown primary turbo? (noise)
Just noticed today when taking off from a stand-still or cruising slowly then giving it some juice that the turbo noise is LOUD, usually dont hear much of the suction noise at all. Also it CLEARLY feels like there is almost no boost til I get going and it seems like the just secondary kicks in. I am still new to rx7s as of this past June as well as turbos in general, there is no exhaust type of noise or anything else to accompany it, just the LOUD suction/typical turbo noise and no boost til secondary. Cracked? blown? any help is apprectiated.
Thanks

You might just have a boost leak.
Start checking the couplers and piping from the turbos to the throttlebody.
Most likely culprit is the coupler from the Y-pipe to the crossover tube. Make sure you take them off and inspect them thoroughly.
One more thing, if you don't have it yet, get a boost guage. It's the single most important tool in diagnosing turbo related issues. Temporarily you can rig a pressure guage by running the vac line through the window and have a buddy read it for you.
Also read the FAQ stickied at the top and search the forum. There is tons of info regarding turbo issues.
Good luck, hopefully it's just something really simple.

Another thing to remember, stay off the throttle until you figuered out the problem.
If it's a leak the turbos will spin way past they normal operating range trying to make up for the pressure lost by the leak. Very bad for their seals...

Thanks guys! im checking the FAQ now. Also did think hopefully its just some sort of leak, just by the sound and feel (as lame as that sounds) it just seems a bit minor compared to hardcore damage.
Thanks again
