Blew engine at 4,000 miles
#28
Update; yes Rich. Car is still in his shop. he got 2 new rotor housings and 1 remaned rotor. He said my clutch was in bad shape. Had a 6 puck ACT with light weight flywheel in there. Cam said fly wheel was scored up pretty bad . Damn that clutch was also brand new. I think I was slipping it to much while driving around town. Cam will put in a ACT HD, street in. I know thats only good for 400lb/ tq. So now im limtied to how much power I put down. I metioned to him that I will like to have 500whp. but he wants to put that one in. I wanted to go with the Excey twin plate and he said thats junk and will not last long.
Last time I called him he said he was porting the hell out of the housings. Not sure what kind hes doing. Maybe a little bigger this time around. As soon as the car gets back, the meth injection kit is going in, no more waiting around. If I had that in the first place I could have saved $5,500 but never got around to it.
Not sure when he will finish hopefully by the end of the month. Another thing that went out right before the engine poped was the ABS. So I have to ask for a rebuild on that also another $750 don't want to eliminate as it's always a good idea to have it in. I'm not that a good of a driver yet to get rid of it............ahhh the things we do for the 7.

Exedy twin plate junk? Seriously?
Don't go with the ACT HD pressure plate, get the Extreme pressure plate. That will handle what the 500R can throw at it much moreso than the Heavy Duty.
In my opinion the owner of the car has the final say on the parts that are installed...... it's his decision not to give a warranty, but if he's giving the go-ahead on an ACT clutch, I can't imagine he'd have a problem with one with more clamping pressure

Maybe I missed something. It is interesting to see a slither of light spoken on port design as it is the one "secret" that seems to exist forumwise.
If I understand correctly your car was tuned for 10psi on a 500r which seems like your car must be running terrible as those 850/1600 setup is no where close to its maximum. Then all of a sudden your car spiked to 12psi and your motor broke? Stupid but maybe that spike could be largely to play I mean if we look @ delta CFM on stock twins in 2 psi delta to delta CFM on a 500 R for the same change it might be drastically different not enough so for your tune to have been "free" enough to take it.
Also I agree with Mono you better have the legs of Jean Claude Van Damme for that PP!

I had a 6 puck in there before is it harder then that?
Dradon, Im not sure what your saying in your post? Maybe 12psi was to much and wasnt tuned for it? Cam was saying how the port didnt look right from the begining. That was done by Mazda trix. and they also coated the housing's in thier secert coating stuff.

just to stir the pot...
i have 14,000 miles on my Exedy twin cerametallic clutch and the only way you'd ever get it from me is over my dead body.
the problem w the rotary is it is so small! 13 inches by 13 inches. consequently it has a small flywheel.
small flywheel small frictional surface. the Physical Laws prevail. if you want to hold alot of torque and you have a small frictional surface you need tons of spring pressure. literally.
all the clutch companies give you the BS but in order to hold more that 400 ft pounds of torque you need more than 2600 pounds of spring pressure.
unless:
you double the frictional area. my Exedy twin has only 2000 pounds of springs and will hold 700 ft pounds and is a dream to drive. anywhere.
as to Exedy being junk... somebody better go to school.
Exedy is the research/advanced design/racing arm of Daikin. Daikin is a multi billion dollar rev co that has customers like Toyota and Ford and, well you get my drift.
get the cerametallic not the carbon. the cerametallic is a Patented material and it slips and grips.
carbon is not carbon/carbon but carbon/steel. the frictional coefficient between the two varies between .39 and .49 depending on heat. the cerametallic is .49 anytime.
love the clutch. buy it once and you won't be buying a clutch again.
BTW, i did pull my 14,000 mile 4 year motor just to check it out and my clutchplates look like they haven't been used.
i remain dubious that the ports were your problem. i doubt Mazdatrix would give you bad ports and i doubt Cam would allow bad ports into a motor that had his name on it.
keep us posted. you will love the motor on alcohol and have some great pieces.

radiantrx7, the clutch disc (6 puck etc) will determine the 'grabbing' characteristic of the clutch as it relates to driveability, the clamping force of the pressure plate is usually what determines pedal pressure.
Having said that, my Spec sprung 6 puck is very streetable with a light pedal, so go figure......

Howard, thanks for explaining it well. I wish he will listen to me so I can get that clutch. I have read all good things on that clutch and know its soild. I will just have to keep it below 400 Ft/torq. of now, unitl it goes out. Then get it later on.
Im sure 400 lb. of torque is more then enough to keep me happy for a while.

The customer is always right. So Thats it I'm going to tell him that im getting the Exedy. It's a pain in the *** to call this guy every day. Cause I'm working in Afghanistan. Trust me if I was there he will hear it from me. I don't want to go back there if something goes wrong whith lets say the clucth. And hear it like ohhh I told you that wasnt good and on and on.
Anyways I will insist on getting the clutch put in.
Rich; when I was a Sgt. in the Marine Corps and an Army Cpt. told me smtg................... ehhhh J/K.
